Meemie was a hybrid. On her father's side she descended from many ancient New England families, while her maternal Smith forbears were prosperous Irish-Americans. She was also a geographic hybrid, born and raised in Connecticut and educated at Connecticut College for Women. But her first marriage brought her to Dallas, where she lived for most of the rest of her life.

Meemie was intelligent, had a keen sense of humor, was a compassionate and loyal friend and relation, but was not one to suffer in silence. At least one family member called her 'Auntie Meem, ' after the charismatic and very funny Patrick Dennis character.

She was active in several organizations including the Junior League of Dallas, and was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Meemie endured many years of kidney dialysis and had other infirmities. Yet her sparkle remained.

Funeral services will be held Monday for Earl Edward Flannery, 75, 380 North Sunrise Way, Palm Springs, who died at his home Tuesday.

A native of Highland Park, Ill., he had been a local resident for three years. He lived in California for 30 years.

He is survived by his widow, Pauline Flannery; three sisters, Margaret Johnson and Mary Seelman of Muskegon, Mich., and Josie Gaskell of Lake Isabella; and numerous nieces and nephews living in the Middle West.

The services will be held at 10 a.m. from Wiefels and Son Mortuary, with Duane Fowler, pastor of Unity in the Desert Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Forest Lawn-Covina Hills Memorial Park.
