Edwin Fox, Ex-Postmaster For Athens, Is Dead at 73
ATHENS -- Edwin Lloyd Fox, 73, of 316 S. Avenue A, a long time resident of the Athens area, its Postmaster under four presidents, and in his youth a championship baseball pitcher for the village, died about 1 p.m. Sunday in a Battle Creek hospital. He had been ill for six months.
Mr. Fox was born in Kingsville, Ohio, Aug. 11, 1891, son of Adelbert and Arrie Jane (Fuller) Fox, and moved here with the family as a child in 1896. In high school, he was a pitcher for the Athens High School baseball team that in 1909 and 1910 won what was then known as the state championship of Michigan. His brother, A. Roy Fox, was catcher on the battery.
Mr. Fox graduated from high school in 1912, and from 1913 to 1917 was a rural mail carrier out of Athens. In December, 1917, he joined the U.S. Navy for World War I, and served until March, 1919.
In 1920, he became Athens postmaster, holding the position under Presidents Harding, Coolidge, Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Leaving the postmaster position in 1935, he worked as postal clerk until 1937, when he went to work for the Eaton Manufacturing Co. in Battle Creek. He was in the plant protection department, retiring in 1953.
From 1937 to 1942, he was a member of the Athens School Board, and was its president the last two years of his service.
Mr. Fox was a life member of Athens Lodge No. 220, F&AM, a member of Athens Lodge No. 146, RAM, and was a member of Athens Congregational Church.
He was married June 14, 1923, to Miss Ermile Swartz, who survives. In addition, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John (Jeanne Marie) Schier of 356 Country Club Terrace in Battle Creek; two granddaughters; four brothers, A. Roy Fox of Athens, Dr. Joe Fox of Wingham, Ont., George Fox of 169 Bryant Ave., Battle Creek, and Marion Fox, Athens Towsnship supervisor.

John was an Eagle Scout and served as a scout leader for many years, coached youth sports and was instrumental in establishing the Door/Kewaunee Chapter of the Ice Age Trail and Park Foundation. He was an avid camper through his 79th year. John served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include Della Fox, Kewaunee; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas and Connie Fox, Robert Fox, Timothy Fox, all of Michigan; Andrew Rey, Benjamin and Cathi Rey, all of Minnesota; one granddaughter, McKayla Rey, Minnesota; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Margaret Fox, South Carolina; one sister, Patricia Auten, Michigan; nieces and nephews.

Dr. Josiah Alvin Fox died circa 1966 at Wingham, Huron Co., Ontario, Canada, Dr. Joe Fox, Wingham, Ontario is listed as a survivor in his brother Edwin's obituary (FEB 1965) but not listed in his brother George's obituary (NOV 1966). Civic leader was ex-Athens Township supervisor
ATHENS -- Marion A. "Red" Fox, 91, of W. Mill St., a former Athens Township supervisor and long active in community and county affairs, died Thursday, Jan. 26, in Mercy Pavilion.
He was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, and came to Athens as a boy. He graduated from Athens High School, where he was pitcher on the Athens State Championship Baseball Team.
He was a rural letter carrier in Athens from 1917 to 1958. During his 40-year career, he drove nearly one-half million miles with the Postal Service, beginning in a Model T. After retiring, he was employed by Spencer Funeral Home. After retirement, he wintered in Lakeland, Fla.
He served 25 years as a Scout leader and Scoutmaster and had received the Scouting Silver Beaver Award. He had worked 20 years with the Athens Girls Softball League, taking participants to state championships. He was a longtime member of Athens Congregational Church, where he was a member of the board of trustees, a Sunday School superintendent, church secretary and Sunday School teacher. He worked with Athens Homecoming Committee and was emcee at homecoming talent shows.
He was a member of Rural Letter Carriers Association and served five times as county president. He was an active member and president of the Calhoun County Republican Party; served as Athens Township supervisor from 1959 to 1969; was a member of Calhoun County Fair Board; chairman of Calhoun County Medical Examiners Board; a member of Calhoun County Board of Supervisors; an honorary member of Rotary Club; a member of the Athens Cemetery Board and Athens Community Association; and a charter member of Athens Historical Society. In 1975, he was made honorary citizen of the year.
Surviving is a daughter, Patricia L. Auten of Battle Creek; sons John A. Fox of Keewaunee, Wis., and Dr. Richard C. Fox of Anderson, S.C; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
His wife of 64 years, Mary R. Snyder, died in 1981.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Spencer Funeral Home. Memorial donations may go to the Athens Historical Society.
He was buried in 1989 at Burr Oak Cemetery, Athens, Calhoun Co., MI, Findagrave #84157636.
