Enoch Fuller

M, b. 1784, d. 9 June 1860
     Note:
1. From "History of the Western Reserve" by Harriet Taylor Upton, 1910, Vol. 1, page 559:

"An early settler, Enoch Fuller is remembered particularly because his wife bore 'the euphonious name of Karenhappuch.' He had a large family of daughters whose descendants still live on the Reserve. His son Josiah was a stage driver, later a liveryman and finally settled on a farm at Saybrook. He was a great Mason, went to the conclave at San Francisco and was the life of the party."

2. From "History of Ashtabula County" by Moina W. Large, Vol. 1, Historical Publishing Co., Topeka-Indianapolis, 1924, Chapter XII, "Ashtabula Township":

"Rev. John Hall, who was for a long time a resident here and for several years rector of St. Peter's Church, wrote a series of historical sketches in the year 1856, relative to Ashtabula as a township and village, from which the following information is taken....

..... 'The writer, upon arrival (February 7, 1811), found settled here .... p. 159 ... "Enoch Fuller, born in New York and came to Austinburg in 1807; poor man and worked for Hall Smith clearing land.'

3. Enoch and Karenhappuch had 13 girls and 4 boys according to the Taylor family legend, as written in that correspondence.

4. Enoch Fuller purchased one acre and 40 rods, in Ashtabula County, in 1824 from Amos Fisk and Mary Fisk (Deed book "F", page 432). Enoch later sold this same land to his son Josiah Fuller in 1833 (Deed book "N", page 189).

5. From "The Life of Rev. John Hall", by his grandson Rev. Francis J. Hall (quote from unpublished manuscript):

"My Grandfather was born in Lenox, Massachusetts, November 5, 1788, of puritan ancestry. The line, so far as ascertained, begins with Ichabod Hall, who was born in Wales about 1705, and in early life came to New England. He was the first of seventeen children. He settled in Enfield, Connecticut, and had nine children.

Ebenezer, the oldest of these was born in 1730. he moved to Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and was twice married, having twelve children by his first wife and four by his second wife. He was commander of the Massachusetts volunteers for frontier defense, and was noted as an Indian fighter.

The sixth of his children was Moses, born in New Marlborough, Massachusetts, in 1762. He enlisted in the Continental Army of the Revolutionary War at the age of eighteen. Subsequently he was a cloth dresser at Lee, Massachusetts, and then turned to farming in Lenox, Massachusetts. He had fourteen children, of whom the subject of this "Life" was the oldest.

My grandfather showed an early taste for study, and studied Latin and Greek under the Rev. Dr. Hyde, a Congregational minister at Lenox. At the age of nineteen he began to study medicine, but the migration of the family to Ohio changed his plans.

He travelled alone on horse-back to Ashtabula, Ohio, reaching there February 7, 1811. His father, Moses Hall, came to Ohio in the same year with the rest of his children; and bought timbered lands in Ashtabula, Dover and Lorain County, giving 150 acres to each of his sons and 100 acres to each of his daughters--the land being distributed in the places above named.

My Grandfather at once took a clerkship with Mr. Hall Smith, a cousin who kept a general store in Ashtabula. He boarded with this cousin, at the house of the Rev. Joseph Badger, a Presbyterian Missionary.

Mr. Badger was the first Christian Missionary in Ohio, commencing his labours in 1800 and continuing them for many years. His travels and toils were heroic, and in my own childhood my Grandfather told me various stories of his remarkable adventures among the Indians and with the wild beasts in the forests.

During the war of 1812, in March, 1813, my Grandfather was bringing a sleigh-load of goods for Mr. Hall Smith from Connecticut. In Buffalo his sleigh was seized for use in meeting a British company which was thought to be advancing on the ice across Lake Erie to attack the city. He went along as driver. The alarm proved to be a false one, and he recovered his sleigh, reloaded his goods, and rode on to Ashtabula. In May of the same year he served in command of one of several small detachments sent out to watch along the lake shore near Ashtabula Harbor against threatened landings of the British. Harmless shots were exchanged with a British vessel off shore, which finally sailed away. It was thought that the maneuver of marching in a circle among the trees gave the enemy the impression that a large force of Americans was ready to resist a landing." (end manuscript quote.)

Enoch Fuller was born in 1784 at Dutchess or Columbia Co. (probably), NY,

The individual who I believe (but have never proven) was his father, Josiah Fuller, appears in the 1790 census, page 233, Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York, and in the 1830 census, page 160, Saratoga, Saratoga County. He gave depositions in Warren and Saratoga Counties in March and May, 1833, respectively, in support of his brother Varsell's Revolutionary War pension application.1

He was the son of Josiah Fuller and Ruth (?) Enoch Fuller lived in 1807 at Austinburg, Ashtabula Co., OH, Enoch Fuller joined the Western Reserve Company as a hired hand and walked the Mohawk Trail to the Western Reserve of Ohio, arriving about 1807, according to family tradition.

Enoch Fuller appears at number 249 on the 1811 tax list for Ashtabula County.2

He married Karenhappuch Parmer/Palmer, daughter of (?) Parmer/Palmer, on 12 January 1809 at Austinburg (probably), Geauga (now Ashtabula) Co., OH, by Noah Cowles, J.P.

In the "Widow's Declaration" affidavit dated 7 Febuary 1876, Pension File of Happy Fuller, she stated that the marriage date was 13 February 1807.

Marriage record (found in Geauga County records) names her "Karen Happuch Parmer of Richfield". "Richfield Township" was an early designation of the part of the Western Reserve that was later established as Ashtabula County, and is not near the present-day town of Richfield, Ohio.

In her pension application, Karenhappuch stated she was married at Austinburg. This matches the quotation from "History of Ashtabula County" which says Enoch Fuller came first to Austinburg and worked there clearing land for Hall Smith.3

Enoch Fuller began military service on 25 August 1812 at Ashtabula Co., OH, Private, Capt. John R. Reed's Co., Ohio Militia, through 9 March, 1813. Was serving as guard of military stores at Ashtabula Harbor when the British in ships offshore fired at the log storage house.4,5

Enoch Fuller lived in October 1850 at Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH.1
He died on 9 June 1860 at Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH,

Happy Fuller's pension records (official file summary) says 1861. Headstone shows year 1860. Affidavit of Josiah Fuller and Julia Ann Fuller in pension file also says it was 1860. The 1860 Federal Census of Saybrook Twp., Ashtabula County was conducted on June 13, 1860. On that date, Happy Fuller is found living with only her 18-year old granddaughter, Frances Maria Laskey (Charlotte's daughter) in the household. Thus, 1860 appears to be the correct year.

He was buried in June 1860 at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH, Headstones for Enoch and Happy Fuller include (on the top edge) the words "Grandfather" and "Grandmother", respectively, indicating that the stones were placed by a grandchild. Deteriorated headstones for the first wife (Mary Ann), and a daughter (Catherine) of Enoch's son Josiah Fuller are adjacent, and his grandson Josiah Fuller's headstone, along with that of his wife Mary, are also adjacent to the lot. Headstones seen and photographed by Donald L. Boyd, August 2002. Findagrave #36438084.
