The Edwardsville Intelligencer was founded in 1862 by James Brown and Henry Barnsback. Originally known as the Madison Intelligencer, it was published weekly and then eventually twice weekly under new publisher Charles Boeschenstein. It became a daily (except Sunday) in 1907.
The Intelligencer is still published six days a week. The paper was sold to employee Charles Spillman in 1915 who in turn 12 years later sold it to Gilbert Giese. Giese took on Oscar Ochs as a co-owner. They sold the Intelligencer in 1960 to a Massachusetts publishing company. In 1964, it was again sold, this time to Lindsay-Schaub, a chain of four papers in Illinois. In 1979, the Intelligencer was purchased by Lee Enterprises Inc. of Iowa which then sold it to its present owners, The Hearst Corporation.
