Haskell E. Godsey, age 74, of Piney Flats went home to be with his Lord, Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Sullivan County he was a son of the late Andrew J. and Virginia Muriel Quillen Godsey. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Jeanette Greenway. He was a member and honorary elder of the Victory Bible Fellowship and a US Army veteran. Mr. Godsey was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the M.M. Martin 547 Lodge and also a member of Eastern Star and Jerico Shrine Club. He was a retired truck driver for Mason and Dixon Freight Lines. S. service and was appointed May 15, 1861, 2d Lieut. Co. H 10th U.S. Infantry, 5th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac; promoted to 1st Lieut. July 1, 1861. He was stationed at Fort Columbus, Governor's Island, N.Y., in command of a company and acting Adjutant at Fort Wood, Bedloe's Island, N.Y. Oct 12th, he was appointed Commandment of the post, serving until Nov. 21, 1862, when having applied for permission to rejoin his regiment at Washington, D.C., he was granted leave of absence and reported in command of his company -- Dec. 15, where he remained on duty until the beginning of the Peninsular campaign under McClellan, March 12, 1862, and was in command of his company during the entire campaign until he was given command of a Battery of rapid firing guns. Wounded in right leg by gunshot while in command of the Battery at Malvern Hill, Va., July 1, 1862, also by a piece of casting from a gun boat shell in same battle. Honorably discharged Oct. 3, 1862 on account of wounds and disability.
Re-enlisted into service July 17, 1863, as a private in Co. F, 118th Reg. Pa. Vol. Inf., regiment assigned to 3d Brigade, 1st Dev. 5th Ary Corps. Took part in engagements at Rappahannock River, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Bowling Green, North Ann, Totopotomoy, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, Weldon R.R., Preble's Farm, Dabney's Mills, Siege of Petersburg, Hatcher's Run, Gravelly Run, Five Forks, and Appomattox Station (Lee's Surrender), also a number of minor engagements, and in the Grand Review at Washington, May 24, 1865.
Promoted to 2d Lieut. Co. F, July 14, 1864; transferred and Promoted to 1st Lieut. Co.
