6 in Family Escape Death by Poisonous Fumes During Night
Furnace Gases Fill Hahn Home in Monroe Twp; 3 Treated at Hospital
A family of six narrowly escaped death from carbon monoxide poisoning early last Friday morning. Fumes from a hand-fired coal furnace were blamed.
Stricken during the night were Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hahn and their four chilcren, of Monroe Township, R. R. 1, Selinsgrove. They included Ben, 19; Joan, 17; Esther, 12, and Daniel, 8.
Family was evidently saved from asphixiation when Esther Hahn awoke about 2 A.M. Friday and attempted to walk to the bathroom. She was staggering and unable to talk when the noise aroused her mother, who also felt ill. She in turn awoke Mr. Hahn who summoned the Americus ambulance from Sunbury.
Leaving the other three children asleep at home, the father followed the ambulance to Community Hospital, Sunbury, in his own car, unaware of the nature of the illness of his wife and daughter. He later became ill himself, but not until after he had telephoned to his house to alert the rest of the family.
Ben Hahn, awakened by the ringing of the telephone, staggered and fell as he went downstairs to answer it. He then managed to climb back upstairs, where he found Joan on the floor of her bedroom, in a dazed condition. They awoke the youngest boy and went outside, where they quickly recovered in the fresh air.
Mr. and Mrs. Hahn and Esther responded promptly to dispensary care and returned home during the night. Doors and windows of the house were opened to provide ventilation.
Carbon monoxide gas was believed to have been caused by an accumulation of soot over the summer months, rather than by any defect in the furnace.
He died on 17 June 2003 at age 91. He was buried in June 2003 at Lewisburg Cemetery, Lewisburg, Union Co., PA, Findagrave #113824791.
