Guests Mutt-er When Dog Dives In
By DON BEDWELL
Delray Beach Bureau Chief
BOYNTON BEACH -- It's one thing to have a dog that digs the swimming bit, you know, when only the family is around.
But it can get a hair embarrassing to have a lumbering pooch pounce into your backyard pool when it's al-occupied (sic) by company.
"It is something of a problem," admitted William Hanshumaker of Boynton. "It's impossible to swim without her."
Just the same, the Hanshumakers don't plan to pour cold water on the affections of Duchess, their furry year-old pool toy.
They'd rather let the surprised visitors mutt-er.
Duchess, described in one estimate as "part German shepherd and some kind of terrier," loves her daily dip -- especially when guests are paddling about.
With claws skidding on the damp surface of the sundeck, Duchess whips up momentum until she can leave her concrete launching pad in a long trajectory that ends with a mighty splash.
Her greatest delight, though, is to land downrange on the head of one of the willing Hanshumaker children, Cathy, 9, or Billy, 10.
A well-schooled canine, Duchess can get out of the pool the easy way -- walking up the concrete steps in the shallow end -- or via the hard route, doggedly negotiating steps of the pool ladder.
Duchess, obviously clinging to the belief that she cherishes a retriever heritage, sports a flailing dog-paddle that keeps her withing nipping distance of the swift-swimming little Hanshumakers.
Although her ill-timed entrances have sometimes proved mortifying, they are tolerated patiently by Hanshumaker, a contractor, and wife Peggy, a City Recreation Department sparkplug.
Thy're accustomed to Duchess' peculiarities, you see.
There was, for instance, the doorway Hanshumaker fashioned to permit the dog to enter the house at will.
Duchess turned up her muzzle at that after discovering her long frame wouldn't slide through before the hinged door closed on her tail.
Figuring her people were barking up the wrong tree she fashioned her own entranceway by marching through a screen.
The doggie door hasn't gone to waste, Hanshumaker added, choosing his words carefully as though expecting to incite disbelief.
It has been utilized instead by George, one of the family's three turtles, he explained with a trace of understandable hesitation.
