JACK E. HATFIELD, age 87, left this life for his heavenly home on September 27, 2003, at his home in Leawood, Kansas. Services were held at Faith Lutheran Church, 67th and Roe, Prairie Village, Kansas, Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at 11:00 A.M. Visitation was held preceding the services in the narthex of the church at 10:00 A.M. Graveside services were in the Lindsborg, Kansas, at 4:00 P.M. the same day.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Florence, of 63 years; his daughters, Sharon Perilo from Omaha, Nebraska, Sheryl Fuqua from Hesston, Kansas; his seven grandchildren, Chad Fuqua and wife, Abbie, Karla Scott, Joshua, Anna, Nathan, Aaron and David Perilo; and three great-grandchildren, Jackie and Layne Scott and Evan Fuqua; two sisters, Jean Minor and husband, Earl, of Searcy, Arkansas and JoAnn Neel and husband, Tom, of Denver, Colorado; one brother, Merle Hatfield and wife, Lil, of Kennewick, Washington. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard and Boyd, and by sisters, Kathryn, Iris, Velma, Dorothy, Wilma, and one stepsister, Sallie.
Jack was born August 8, 1916, in Belle Plaine, Kansas, the fourth child of the 11 children born to Grover and Bessie (Winkle) Hatfield. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1934 and immediately entered the work force to help support the family. By 1940, he was employed at Cessna Aircraft Industry in Wichita, Kansas. He was united in marriage with Florence Jenkins of Lindsborg, Kansas, on September 1, 1940. They resided in Wichita until 1961 and were dedicated members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church there. The family moved to Kansas City in 1961, when Jack was employed by Natkin and Co. He was sent to Cape Kennedy to work as field supervisor on the Apollo program for two years. He worked with various Mechanical contractors and retired from Bendix Corp Facility Dept. in 1982.
Jack served in the European Theater of the U.S. Army during World War II in the 7th Armored Division, 31st tank battalion - 1944-1946. He lived a life that commanded respect from everyone who knew him, his family, friends, neighbors and community. He was a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church for 39 years. He was a kind and generous, patient and selfless man who served his Lord by caring for everyone around him and lending a helping hand wherever it was needed.
He will be greatly missed and long and fondly remembered. His family will treasure in their hearts the wonderful memories we have of him. These memories will sustain us in our sorrow and throughout the coming years.
Jack requested that memorials given be designated for the Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries or Faith Foundation in care of Faith Lutheran Church, 4805 West 67th Street, Prairie Village, Kansas.
He was buried on 1 October 2003 at Lindsborg, McPherson Co., KS.
