He was the son of Willard and Bertha Delong Hinton. He married Mildred R. Arledge on July 27, 1930, and they had five children: Herman, Jr., Don, Glenn, Beverly and Sally.

He was a member of the Colerain United Methodist Church all his life. He was also a Centralia school bus driver, director of the Ross County Board of Elections, a farmer, Jury Commission and was a member of the Adelphi Community Band since 1925.
