Mahitable Hopper

F, b. 1824, d. 1910
Mahitable Hopper was also known as "Hester". She was born in 1824 at Ohio.1,2 She married Pierson Dye on 14 February 1856 at Morrow Co., OH. Mahitable Hopper died in 1910.
Note: Regarding this person's name:

The evidence supporting "Hopper" as Pierson Dye's wife's maiden name is less than 100% convincing. Here's what I found:

- His son Plimpton's death certificate names his mother Mahatable Hopper.

- A Morrow County, Ohio marriage record shows P. Dye married "Hester Hoffer" on 14 FEB 1856.

- Pierson Dye, age 26, born Pennsylvania, is listed on the 1850 census at Congress Twp., Morrow Co. OH. He was married to Rachel, age 23, and had one child, Charles, age 0.

- A Richland County, Ohio marriage record shows "Pearson Due" married Rachel Brewer on 29 MAY 1847.

- There is a Rachel Dye buried in Morrow County, died in 1883 at age 80, wife of Andrew Dye -- possibly Pierson's parents, but clearly not his first wife. Did not find anything more on the first wife.

- 1860 census, Fayette Twp., Linn Co., IA has "Pearson", 37, b.PA, "Mahittable", 36, b.OH, daughter Adelia, age 9, b.OH, and Elias P., age 6 months, born IA.

- Adelia married Nathan Sanford in 1877, per Iowa marriage index. On the 1880 census she is listed as "Francis" Sanford, age 29, and her mother is listed as "Hetty" Dye, age 56.

- On her 1891 marriage to Alexander Hicks, using her maiden name, Adelia's parents were listed as Pierson Dye and Hattie "Harper".

- On her 1900 marriage to J.P. Owen, her parents were listed as Pearson Dye and M. Hopper.

- On his 1891 marriage record, Sherman Dye's parents are listed as P. Dye and M. Hooper.

- There was at least one Hopper families in Morrow County -- for example Elias Hopper born in Pennsylvania about 1823 is listed there, and married Mary Swallen there in 1848. This Elias Hopper also migrated to Linn County, Iowa in the timeframe that Pierson and Mahitable went. Two online family trees at ancestry.com show Elias and Mehitable were siblings, children of William Hopper (1789 - 1868) and Elizabeth Faulk (1790 - 1868), buried at Bryn Zion Cemetery, Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

Although other conclusions are certainly possible, the most obvious possiblity is that "Hester" = "Mahitable" and "Hoffer"="Hopper". This is my choice for most likely. It's disturbing that none of the Mahitables or Hesters listed on the 1850 census of the Morrow County area look plausible. Adelia's birth date in late 1850 or (more likely) 1851 suggests to me that her mother may have already been married a first time as of the 1850 census. And Pierson Dye was most unlikely to have been Adelia's biological father, although he was probably the only father she knew. So, the conclusion remains considerably less than 100% certain, but I'm listing Pierson's wife as Mahitable Hopper. DLB 2020.

She was buried in 1910 at Center Point Cemetery, Center Point, Linn Co., IA, Findagrave #149405556.

Nadine Sadie Hopper was born on 25 June 1917 at Blackwell, Kay Co., OK.1 She was the daughter of Garret Rudolph Hopper and Bonnie Marie Starr.1 Nadine Sadie Hopper lived on 1 April 1935 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK.2 She married Tom Rand McCowen, son of Charles McCowen and Emma Catherine Henry, after 11 May 1940, Tom and Nadine Hasselvander were living together when the 1940 census of Los Angeles was taken.2 Nadine Sadie Hopper lived on 12 May 1940 at 1427 South Burlington Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, lodger, divorced, drug handler, laboratory.2 She died on 14 February 1994 at Lane Co., OR, at age 76. Note: According to the SS Applications and Claims Index, Nadine originally applied in JUN 1938 as Nadine Sadie Hopper, but her file was updated in DEC 1938 with her name as Nadine Hopper Hasselvander. She was still using Hasselvander as of 11 MAY 1940 but she was living with Tom Cowen on that date when the census was taken in Los Angeles. Her name was not updated to "Cowen" until FEB 1963, although she was married to Tom Cown by the time he completed his WW II draft registration, about 1941 (age 23). I don't find any other evidence of the Hasselvander marriage, or who he was. DLB 2021.
