Charles D. Horn Dies; Retired Educator

Charles Dwight Horn, who taught in the St. Louis and Alton school systems, died Sunday at Chastain's of Des Peres nursing home.

Mr. Horn, 78, of Clayton, had been a principal at the Horace Mann Elementary School in Alton before becoming a teacher in St. Louis. He taught at Beaumont and Roosevelt high schools and retired eight years ago.

He was a member of the Third Baptist Church and the Masons.

Surviiving are his wife Elizabeth; a daughter, Phyllis Ann Wofford, and a brother.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Lupton Chapel, 7233 Delmar Boulevard, University City. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Note: It appears from public records that Harry married Alma Pauline Simmons (1918 - 2002) about 1963, and divorced at Los Angeles, California in 1971. Alma was born at Emden, Shelby County, MO, according to her SS Applications and Claims Index file. She had previously married a Carpenter in about 1949, and a Blackford in about 1961. After divorcing Harry, she married a Logan in about 1976.

     Levi H. Horn was born on 18 October 1845 at Pennsylvania. He married Lovonia Semira Starr, daughter of Jabez Starr and Jane Gregory, on 22 December 1872 at Jasper Co., IA, Per 1900 census, Richland Twp., Jasper Co., p.233, a total of 3 children were born to the marriage, of which only Ada was living as of 1900. Levi H. Horn died on 25 June 1922 at age 76.

     Lillian Grace Horn was born on 22 September 1890 at Akron, Summit Co., OH. She was the daughter of William Frederick Theodore Horn and Cora Eliza Williams. Lillian Grace Horn married George Longbottom, son of Jacob Boston Longbottom and Esther Firth, on 21 August 1910 at Akron, Summit Co., OH. Lillian Grace Horn married Slim Gordon Wagner. Lillian Grace Horn died on 1 January 1980 at Yuma, Yuma Co., AZ, at age 89. She was buried in January 1980 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Akron, Summit Co., OH, Findagrave #6155085.

     Millie Horn was born on 17 July 1895 at Reeds, Jasper Co., MO.¹ She married Smith M. Pipkin on 3 September 1913 at Clovis, Curry Co., NM. Millie Horn died on 10 February 1975 at Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 79.

     Nathan Wylie Horn was born in March 1830 at Illinois.¹ He married Barbara M. Wendell, daughter of William D. Wendell and Effie Margaret DeLong, at Logan or Mason Co., IL, no children. 1900 census, for Barbara shows one child born, still living, but this cannot have been correct unless it was referring to an adopted child. 1870 and 1880 censuses show no children born to Barbara and her first husband William Tauberman, and the only child present in the Horn household in 1900 was Della, age 20, daughter of Nathan Wylie Horn and his first wife, who can be found as an infant in the 1880 census.      Pearl Viola Horn was born circa 1890 at Minnesota. She married Harry Munson Brines, son of George Henry Brines and Iola Munson, on 23 May 1916 at Tacoma, Pierce Co., WA.

     William Horn was born in 1824 at Pennsylvania.¹ He married Emeline Irey, daughter of Mahlon Irey and Rachel Margaret McBride, circa 1849.¹ William Horn died in 1888. He was buried in 1888 at Gilead Cemetery, Balbec, Jay Co., IN, Findagrave #20025519.

     William Frederick Theodore Horn was born on 13 April 1849 at Germany. He married Cora Eliza Williams on 26 December 1889 at Akron, Summit Co., OH. William Frederick Theodore Horn died on 24 June 1923 at Tallmadge, Summit Co., OH, at age 74

William was the son of Frederich August Leopold Horn and Emilia Bertha Gruene. Frederick married Cora Eliza Williams on December 26, 1889 in Akron, Ohio. William came to the USA with his parents, Frederich and Emelia Horn between 1846 and 1856. William had three sisters who were born in Dayton, Ohio after Frederich and Emelia arrived from Germany.

It appears from all information found that William abandoned his first wife and children in Dayton, Ohio and came to Akron, Ohio where he married Cora Eliza Williams without benefit of divorcing his first wife Bertha Rehfus. He died in the Summit County Home in Tallmadge, a lonely divorced man. He was buried near but not next to his divorced wife Cora Eliza Williams.
