Obituary -- Newark Daily Advocate, Newark, Ohio; Monday, 31 DEC 1888:
A DARKENED HOME
Death of Mrs. J. H. Sniffen Sabbath Morning
Again the death angel has tarried in our midst, taking away this time a young wife and mother and leaving a happy xxxx and joyousness of the happy Christmas tide.
Yesterday, Sunday morning at 4 o'clock, Lettie F. Sniffen, the beloved wife of J. H. Sniffen, Esq. of Pusey & Kerr's, passed from a bed of sickness and suffering to the peace and joy of the eternal home. The deceased was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Howland, and was born on her parents' farm near Hebron, in 1858. Early in life she united with the Licking Baptist chruch, and has always maintaineed a lovely and consistent Christian character. Her education was obtained at the Baptist Seminary in Granville. On the 2nd day of August, 1882 (sic), she and her bereaved husband were united in marriage and over five years of happiness were granted to them. Two children were the fruit of this union, a little boy, four and one half years old, and a little girl, only three. Both are now bereft of a lovign mother's care. Almost four years ago Mr. Sniffen's health began to fail and it was not long till traits of the insidious destroyer, consumption, could be seen. All was done for her that love and skill could do, but in vain. Almost three months ago she was permanently confined to the home, and for the last three days to the bed. She was patient and uncomplaining throughtout it all; hopeful to the last and yet always resigned. She was concious up the moment that the spirit took it flight, giving the failest directions to her friends and bidding them the last farewell. The funeral services wil take place from the residence on West Main street, between Sixth and Seventh, tomorrow, Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock; J. W. Walden, of the Second Presbyterian church, will conduct the services. The death of Mrs. Sniffen will be a sad blow, not only to her immediate family but to a large circle of friends; for all of whom, especially the young husband and the two motherless little children, the deepest sympathy will be felt.
She was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Licking Co., OH.
