Obituary -- (Findagrave.com memorial #83476083):
Born to parents George John(Sr)(1885-1956) and Ruth Reigel(1888-1968) HUEBNER in Detroit, MI. Gained employment with Chrysler in their development lab while he completed his formal education--graduating from University of Michigan 1932 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
George was involved or lead on some of the most important and or interesting Chrysler projects:
Throughout George`s career, he pressed on to develop a gas turbine engine to power automobiles and finally in 1963 built 50 cars with gas turbine power for evaluation. The vehicles were great but the timing wasn`t good.
In 1939 George set out to design a unique liquid-cooled inverted V-16 aircraft engine with the goal of doubling the power of existing designs. With 2220 cubic inches of displacement, the power plant produced 2,500 HP and was the first "HEMI" designed by Chrysler. By the time the engine began its test flights in the REPUBLIC XP-47H, the U.S. was turning toward turbojet engines, so the XI2220 "HEMI" never entered full production. The "HEMI" configuration was finally a very big success in 1951 in production Chrysler autos and to this day is a very popular engine.
The U.S. Army Ordnance awarded Chrysler a contract to manufacture an SRBM(short range balistic missle) in 1952. Design responsibility to be shared with Redstone Arsenal and the booster was to be named "Redstone". Huebner was named as the Chief Engineer. George achieved great success in setting up the design team and building the manufacturing process and infastructure to integrate a complete missle. The rocket was built near Detroit, MI and achieved several "firsts" and had very good reliability with no flight failures.
