John N. Jacobs M.D.
M, b. 7 January 1839, d. 30 January 1924
John N. Jacobs M.D. was born on 7 January 1839 at Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of William M. Jacobs and Magdalena Nice.1 John N. Jacobs M.D. married Sarah S. Miller, daughter of George Miller and Barbara Smith, on 10 March 1861, Five children born, four living as of the 1900 census.1,2 John N. Jacobs M.D. died on 30 January 1924 at age 85 Dr. Jacobs attended the country schools of his neighborhood, until he was 14 years of age, when he was entered at the Penna. College at Gettysburg. He then matriculated at the medical dept. of the Penna. College at Phila., and graduated in the class of 1861. The civil war breaking out, he organized Co. M. 8th Pa. Cav. and was made its 1st Lieut; the following June promoted to 1st Lieut; served throughout the was with but one injury, whiich occurred during the seven days fight before Richmond, where his horse fell on his right leg, dislocating the ankle joint, which necessitated his temporary retirement. His certificate of disability was granted July 1, 1862, but on Aug. 11th, he was back in the service and was appointed Asst. Surgeon of Vols. In this capacity he served with the Army of the Potomac till after the Battle of Gettysburg, when he was sent to Vicksburg and served with Grant's army until brought up to Chattanooga under Sherman only a few days before the Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge fight took place. Immediately after the fight, he went to Knoxville with Sherman to the relief of Gen. Burnside's army and returning to Knoxville, was encamped along the line of the Memphis & Charleston R.R. during the winter of '63 and '64. On May 6, 1864 he started with Sherman's Army for Atlanta and after that city's fall, went to Savannah and from thence marched North towards Goldsboro, N.C. After the surrender of Gen. Joseph Johnson's confederate army, the Sherman forces marched to Richmond and on to Washington, taking part in the Grand Review. Received his discharge in June 1865.
After the war Dr. Jacobs began practising medicine at Kulpsville and after four years removed to Lansdale, then a village of less than 30 houses. Here he invested in a large tract of land which later became part of the borough.
In 1873 he organized the National Bank at Green Lane, Pa., and became its cashier, this bank was practically moved to East Greenville, Pa., under the name of the Perkiomen National Bank, chartered in 1875 and was a flourishing concern, at the expiration of its charter in 1895 it became the Perkiomen Trust Co., increased prosperity followed the change until the stock holders voted to liquidate its affairs and surrender its charter in 1899, this was done and the stock-holders were paid over three dollars for every dollar invested in stock.
A new Perkiomen National Bank was opened that same year, Dr. Jacobs continuing as a Director.
In 1887 he organized the Lansdale Trust & Safe Deposit Company and for nine years he served as President, during which time by shrewd conservative management he overcame a $30,000 defalcation by one of the company's officers and closed up a brilliant career, when it went into voluntary liquidation and made a handsome distribution to share-holders.
This splendid financing gave Dr. Jacobs fame among the bankers of the State and led to his being called to rescue the Montgomery Trust Co. of Norristown in 1890 and the Doylestown National Bank in 1903, both tasks were accomplished successfully.
Dr. Jacobs had many interests in Lansdale; for a time he was in the coal and lumber business; he cleared his real estate, laid out streets; advertised for home seekers; built a church and school house and quite a number of dwellings on his land. He was truly the "Father" of Lansdale; no one gave so freely of time, money, and influence to improve local conditions.
He was one of the first to advocate borough incorporation and was for years president of Council and president of the School Board.
He organized the first Building & Loan Association in Lansdale and was its Secretary and Treasurer; was a Director of the Perkiomen R.R. Co; President of the Stony Creek R.R. Co., and President of the Spring Garden Farmers Market of Philadelphia.
When in 1911 Montgomery County qualified by reason of having 150,000 inhabitants, as entitled to a Controller, Governor Tener appointed Dr. Jacobs to the position, to the great satisfaction of the people, and was elected for a term of four years the following fall. When he assumed the office, the county had a debt of nearly $700,000 and at the expiration of his term the county had $223,000 in bank and $75,000 outstanding in uncollected taxes.
One of the local papers said of him "Dr. Jacobs never knew what failure meant. He tackled tough propositions in his time and with that Pennsylvania German tenacity of his, won out in every instance. He won his spurs by clear grit. Where other men sat down to brood over their misfortunes, he sat up and worked and plodded on until failure spelled success. His voluntary enlistment, at the opening of the Civil War, showed the stuff he was made of. As a surgeon he bound up gaping wounds and relieved his suffering comrades. Later in life as a surgeon in the financial world he bound up many a gaping wound. Like the gangrenous limbs of wounded soldiers were cut off to save life, so later in life Dr. Jacobs served as a surgeon to lop off gangrenous appendages from wrecked banks in this section. To be sure, some of them had to go on crutches for awhile, but before the Doctor was through with them, they all had new legs and could stand on their own and walk as well as their fellows."3
