Jan was born in Moline, Ill. on June 19, 1937, to Carl and Margaret (Versluis) Johnson. She attended and graduated from Moline High School, Class of 1955. Jan was united in marriage to John in Moline on June 13, 1959, before moving to Bennett, where they spent many years before moving to Tipton in 1973. Together they were blessed with two daughters, Sheri and Julie.
Earlier years of Jan’s were spent being a homemaker, mother and farmwife until her later years of employment with Wal-Mart, most of which were spent at the Tipton store. Taking vacations with John and dancing were a couple of things Jan cherished most, until she became a grandma. Undoubtedly, there were her pride and joy.
Jan was a past member of St. Mary’s Guild and a current member of st. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Jan is survived by her husband, John Powell; daughters Sheri Huprich of West Point and Julie Powell of Tipton; sisters, carol Johnson, Bonnie Bradford and Marcia Grchan, all of Moline; brothers, Robert Johnson of Moline and Craig (Adonna) Johnson of Arizona; grandchildren, Chris (Amber) Cantonwine, Angie (John) Charbonneau, Ryan (Cindy Johnson) Cantonwine and Jared Huprich; six great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Walter Huprich; nephew; two brothers-in-law; several aunts and uncles; and mother- and father-in-law.
She was buried in May 2016 at Calvary Cemetery, West Point, Lee Co., IA, Findagrave #162086315.

Lingenfelter of Plainview, NE. They married December 11, 1949, and had over 62 years of marriage at his passing in 2012.
Janis and Warren had four children, Kim, the oldest son, died in an accident November 1986. Lyle continues to farm on the family homestead. Jane is a retired RN and lives in San Antonio, TX. Ron manages Norfolk Transmission and Muffler that was started by his brother Kim in 1973.
Along with becoming a busy farmer's wife, Janis acquired many skills. Amongst them raising, butchering, and selling hundred of chickens, and picking and selling endless bushels of sweet corn. Over the years she gained a reputation as a very skilled poet. She started writing poetry at the age of 8 with some of those shared in a book she began. She has written countless number of poems for family, friends, and acquaintances that her children enjoyed reading to her in her final days. Janis was also a prolific knitter, crocheter, crafter, and quilter. Her many talents were endless. She continued her knitting and crocheting up until the last couple of weeks of her death at the Plainview Manor and Whispering Pines Assisted Living. Janis was a member of the Klick and Klatter Club, Plainview Punsters, a local clown group, Tops of Brunswick, Plainview Woman's Club, Spindrift Poetry of Norfolk, the Nebraska Chaparral Poets, and was a member of Eastern Star and was recognized as a 75-year member in 2020.
Janis was preceded in death by her son Kim (survived by wife Deb of Omaha, NE) and husband Warren. She is survived by her three children Lyle and wife Dianne of Plainview, NE, Jane and husband John Shafer of San Antonio, TX, and Ron and wife Bette of Norfolk, NE.
