KEIBLER, RALPH — a retired chief of communications for The Associated Press in New York City and Phoenix, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at the age of 72 in Blue Springs, Mo.
Longtime AP employee Keibler dies
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Ralph Keibler, a technical communications employee at The Associated Press for 42 years, has died at age 72.
His wife, Ellie Keibler, said he died Monday at a long-term care facility in Blue Springs. He died of complications from a brain injury he suffered in a fall at his home about a month ago.
Keibler, who retired in 2001, was born in Bennettsville, Ind., and spent four years in the U.S. Navy before joining the AP in 1959 as an office assistant in the Louisville, Ky., bureau. From 1960 to 1967, he was a technician in New York City; Washington D.C; Roanoke, Va; Indianapolis; Miami and Louisville.
Keibler became chief of communications in New York City in February 1967 before taking the same job in the Phoenix bureau in June 1968. He served in that capacity until becoming technical communications manager in the Kansas City bureau in December 1977.
In Kansas City, he was part of the CTS Engineering Department, which was in charge of various ways AP connected its worldwide network of offices. Over the next quarter-century, Keibler built and maintained one of the AP's first computer systems used to document and maintain myriad systems used by the AP's vast network.
"Literally thousands of maps detailing this and other information were categorized, printed and mailed to offices around the world on a daily basis, all from the little Radio Shack computer network Ralph built and programmed himself," said Brad Martin, senior manager of the AP's Global Operations Centers in Kansas City.
The CTS group eventually disbanded and Keibler continued to work in the Kansas City Technical Center until retiring.
"Ralph will be missed but those of us privileged to work with him will forever be indebted to his tenacity in fixing programs and his willingness to try and help streamline mundane tasks of administration," Martin said.
Dave Young, chief of communications for Missouri and Kansas before retiring in 2002, said Keibler was a dedicated employee who helped the Missouri and Kansas technical department run smoothly by keeping meticulous records.
"Ralph was a fun-loving guy, everybody loved him," Young said. "He would insist you do it his way but always in a way that you wouldn't take offense."
After retirement, Keibler was administrator for Web sites for family, high school alumni, fellow AP retirees and his residential community.
Keibler started his Web site for AP retirees in 2000 and it became very popular with his fellow retirees, said Jack Stokes, an AP spokesman. At the time, the company did not have a Web site for its retirees, so Stokes would provide news to Keibler, who put it on the Web site.
"That served a valuable, valuable function," Stokes said. "He was one of the few people I ever met who was very excited to be retiring because he knew he would get this time to do what he really enjoyed, which was the Web site so he could keep in touch with his colleagues who had the same sense of humor."
The AP began its own Web site for retirees in 2002 and it's worked in tandem with Keibler's site, Stokes said.
Keibler is survived by his wife, a son, three stepchildren, three siblings, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Meyer Funeral Chapel in Blue Springs from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, with burial scheduled for Saturday in Clarksville, Ind.
