Fire Razes home in Cedar Falls (Courier News Bureau)
CEDAR FALLS -- The James Kitzmiller home at 3120 Big Woods Rd. was consumed by fire early Wednesday morning despite fire department efforts to save the two-story frame structure.
Fire chief Dale Holmes said fireman received an alarm at 2:11 a.m. Wednesday but by the time firemen arrived the house was already enveloped in flames.
Kitzmiller, who had been in the home with his wife and teenage son, told firemen he awakened during the night and smelled smoke.
He roused the family and they ran outside for safety, but Kitzmiller told fire officials he re-entered the house to telephone for assistance.
When firemen arrived they were able to salvage most of the family's furniture except that placed in the kitchen and dining room areas where the fire apparently started.
Those room, Holmes daid, "were gone before we got there."
Holmes said the Kitzmiller residence was located in an area north of the city water mains, so fire engines had to haul tanks of water to combat the blaze. He said some 5,600 gallons of water was transported and used during the more than four hours it took to control the blaze.
Holmes said the cause of the blaze is not yet known but that investigation is continuing.
The extent of loss from the fire is not known yet either, Holmes said, but he said he believes the home will be declared a total loss.
The Kitzmiller family has moved in with relatives after the loss of their home.

John Kitzmiller

M, b. 5 December 1801, d. 4 August 1894
John Kitzmiller was born on 5 December 1801 at Boone's Creek, Washington Co., TN. He was the son of Martin Kitzmiller and Mary Elizabeth DeWald. John Kitzmiller married Louisa DeWald, daughter of Philip DeWald and Catharine Lang, on 8 August 1824 at Washington Co., TN, Jacob Ellis, J.P. performed the marriage ceremony

John's father, Martin Kitzmiller, sent John on a business trip to Pennsylvania. On his way to or from Pennsylvania, John met his cousin, Louise DeWald. This meeting eventually resulted in a marriage in Tennessee.

Story told to Newland DeVault by Frederick Russell DeVault. John Kitzmiller lived at Spring House (Stone House), DeVault's Ford, Washington Co., TN, STONE HOUSE B:

John's father built a home for them on part of his large farm. The home, built of stone, became known as "Stone House B" to distinguish it from the parents' home which became known as "Stone House A."

Stone House B was a gem of a home. When compared with other DeVault-Kitzmiller homes, it is small and lacks the setting of the other homes. But though it lacks the gracefullness of Valentine Davault's old home overlooking the Watauga River, the solid dependability of Frederick Davault's old Tavern in Leesburg and the beautiful setting of Stone House A, it has a beauty all of its own. This is primarly due to the fact that it was the home of that remarkable woman, Louise (DeWald) Kitzmiller, who gave us the first genealogy of the family of her grandfather, Henry Dewald of York County, Pennsylvania.

The house is a story and a half high. There were four large rooms on the lower floor and three rooms above. In addition, under the rafters, extending the entire length of the house on both sides were two long, narrow rooms with built in shelves. The main hall of the home is seven feet wide, it has high ceilings and very low doors. In some of the rooms below, small folding doors, less than two feet wide were used. Very similar doors were used in Jefferson's home in Monticello. These doors were taken down and stored in the second floor. Above the fireplaces are fine examples of 18th century hand-carved mantles. The house was plastered both upstairs and down. Upstairs, in a place where some of the plaster had come off, one can see the handmade laths of various widths, lengths and thicknesses. In some of the plaster, animal hair can be seen which was used to strengthen the plaster. The front porch is supported by eight hand-carved posts and all around the top of the porch delecate work was done by hand. The same kind of work as found on the porch of Frederick's Tavern and the old porch that was attached to the side of Valentine's home.
