Monahans Man Slain On Street
Standard-Times News Service
MONAHANS—A used car dealer said here Sunday he shot and killed a man because his own life had been threatened.
Alton Lairmer, 38, who lost both his hands in an oil field accident in 1954, was shot down while his auto was being serviced at a gas station shortly before noon Sunday.
Brooks Estes, 45, Monahans used car dealer, was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder.
Lairmer, shot three times, died at 7:50 p.m. Sunday in Midland Memorial Hospital following a two-stage four-hour operation.
He had been wounded once in the base of his throat and twice in the head. He never regained consciousness after being shot
“He had threatened me,” Estes told the Standard-Times in an interview Sunday night. “He said, ‘I’ll take care of you.’”
Estes was charged in Peace Justice W. A. Gotcher’s felony docket and later posted $3,500 bond. The attempted murder charge had not been changed Sunday night.
“It’s been brewing for a long time,” Estes said of his trouble with Lairmer. “I have tried to ward him off for quite awhile.”
When asked what Lairmer had against him, Estes said:
“I doubt if he even knows himself.”
Rumors in Monahans were that Lairmer and Estes had had a difference of opinion concerning policies. Estes is the nephew of Ward County Judge Carl D. (Toon) Estes.
Estes said “I don’t know how much that had to do with it.”
The used car dealer said he had given a statement concerning the shooting to ward County Dist. Atty. R. B. McGowen Jr.
The shooting occurred at a Texaco Service Station at 416 E. Sealy St. in Monahans.
Witnesses said Lairmer was having his automobile serviced when Estes drove up to a gas pump.
Lairmer walked to the pump near the rear of Estes’ auto.
In a statement, Estes quoted Lairmer as saying, “Get out.”
Witnesses said Estes got out, approached Lairmer and fired one shot which knocked Lairmer to the ground, then fired several more shots at the victim while he was lying on the ground.
Sheriff’s officers said four bullets had been fired from the .22-caliber revolver and apparently two others misfired.
Ward County Sheriff W. B. (Blackie) McNerlin said Estes had hooks as replacements for his hands and used them to drive his auto.
Lairmer underwent two hours of emergency treatment at Ward County Memorial Hospital in Monahans, then was transferred by ambulance to Midland Memorial Hospital. The body was taken to Newnie W. Ellis Funeral Home in Midland.
One of Lairmer’s arms ended at the elbow and the other had been severed near the shoulder. He reportedly lost both arms in an oil field accident in 1954.
Lairmer had spent seven years in the Navy.
Survivors include his wife.
He was buried in July 1962 at Monahans Memorial Cemetery, Monahans, Ward Co., TX, Findagrave #110335407.
