BETTY JAYNE GREENFIELD

Betty Jayne (Atherton) Greenfield of Vineland passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013.

Betty Jayne was born May 10, 1923, in Washington, D.C. to Harry A. and Mildred B. Atherton. She was raised in Washington and Silver Springs, Md. She shared her father's love of boating on the Chesapeake Bay.

Betty Jayne enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and the theater. As a girl scout in Washington, D.C., she helped plant a tree on the White House lawn with first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Betty Jayne attended the University of Maryland and pledged to Kappa Kappa Gamma. In the late 1940s, Betty Jayne worked at the Pentagon for Najeeb Halaby, aide to Secretary of Defense James Forrestal. While there, she was named employee of the month.

She married Vincent Joseph Greenfield on Sept. 17, 1949, in Washington at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. They lived in Silver Springs, Md., before moving to Vineland in 1956. She was an avid volunteer at Sacred Heart Grammar School, where her children attended. With her constant presence at the school, Betty Jayne became the school's secratary for more than 25 years until her retirement at age 79 in 2003. In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by son, V. Michael Greenfield; son and daughter in-law, Gary and Kathleen Greenfield; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Claire Greenfield all of Vineland; son, Robert Greenfield of Robbinsville; son and daughter-in-law, David and Terry Greenfield of Deptford; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Alex Balentine of Atlanta, Ga; daughter and fiance, Julia Raphaely and David Centafont of Bryn Mawr, Pa; grandchildren, Michael Paul Greenfield, Renee Greenfield, Bryan Greenfield, Meredith Greenfield; grandson and wife, Richard and Mary Greenfield; granddaughter and husband, Lauren and Ron Withelder; grandson and wife, Kevin and Victoira Greenfield; grandson and fiancee, Christopher Greenfield and Meghan Moratelli; grandchildren, Morgan, Caitlynn, David, Joseph, Michael and Christine Greenfield, Julia and Chandler Balentine and Elizabeth and Kate Raphaely; great-grandchildren, Ray and Olivia Withelder; sister, Harriet "Buckie" Atherton Haynes. Arrangements are under the supervision of Rone Funeral Service, 1110 E. Chestnut Ave., Vineland.

Dr. Atherton Dies

Dr. Ira Kemp Atherton, 59, director of hog cholera prevention work in Maryland for fourteen years, died suddently at his home at Hyattsville, Tuesday. Dr. Atherton, who attended a banquet of the Chamber of Commerce of Hyattsville, went downstairs after some peppermint, and when he failed to return in a reasonable time, Mrs. Atherton investigated and found him on steps. For the last several months Dr. Atherton had been suffering with high blood pressure. Dr. Atherton was born in Bloomington, Ill. He came to his Maryland position from Iowa. Surviving Dr. Atherton is his widow and a son.

The business grew to one of the largest privately owned fleets in Ohio with the help of many loyal friend and employees. In 1963, in partnership with the Garber Brothers, purchased the former Master Electric Property starting Mega City Warehouse Center with Roger as president. in 1986, with friends Carl Schroder, Charles Norman and Jay Moran started Schroder industries with Roger serving as Chairman of the Board until they sold in 1992, In 1989, Roger retired from Jet Express. Roger proudly served in the U.S. Navy 2 Years. He played Santa at Woodland Lights for 12 years and at Children's Hospital. Roger was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 43 years. He was also a member of the Dayton Agonis Club, Alpha Lodge #729, Ancient Order of Scottish Rite, Antioch Temple, Warren Co. Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters Dayton Court #10, Past President of Miami Valley Transportation Club, Past President of Ohio Trucking Assoc., and past President of Miami Valley Council of Boy Scouts. MELBOURNE -- Funeral services for Mr. Embry S. Atkinson, 68, Indialantic, who died Sunday at Brevard Hospital, will be held today at 4 p.m. at Brownlie Funeral Home with Dr. John MacLean, minister of Eastminister Presbyterian Church officiating.

Mr. Atkinson was born in Henderson, Ky. February 3, 1887, and came here nine years ago from Erie, Pa. He was president of the E. S. Atkinson Company in Erie, a member of the Eastminister Presbyterian Church, Indialantic; Mason,Melbourne Shrine Club and the Kahkwa Club of Erie.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary M. Atkinson, Indialantic; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Pollard, El Paso, Texas; one sister, Mrs. J. Hall Taylor, Oak Park, Ill., one brother, Edward A. Atkinson, Salem, Va. and four grandchildren.

The family request that contributions be sent to Brevard Hospital rather than placed in floral offerings.
