FUNERAL RITES FOR W. E. LAW TO BE HELD MONDAY
Services Will Be Held From Home On West Maple Street - Burial In Oakland
Funeral services for W. E. Law, well known abstractor and realtor of this city, whose death occurred at his office here Friday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, will be held from the home Monday, March 23, at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Mott R. Sawyers will officiate and burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Friends are invited.
****
The death of Mr. Law came as a shock to his many friends and associates here. He had left his home at 1 o'clock bound for his office and apparently in good spirits. He had talked with friends and had displayed no despondency after arriving uptown.
At 2 o'clock, people with whom he had had an appointment called at his office on West Jackson St., in the White building, but found the door locked. They went to the Law home a few blocks distant, thinking that he might be there. Mrs. Law became alarmed and asked friends to go to the office to investigate. They found that the realtor had committed suicide by hanging, in a cloak room at the office.
Death had taken place but a short time before they arrived and police used artificial respiration in a hope of reviving him. On February 7 of last year Mr. Law had sought to take his life with a revolver, but had recovered. Financial reverses over the past few years were believed to have been the cause of his act.
A former member of the well known Law Brothers firm, Mr. Law had been well liked in this vicinity for many years. Had he lived he would have been 66 years of age today. He was a member of different local lodges and of the Presbyterian church.
He was buried in March 1931 at Oakland Cemetery, Centerville, Appanoose Co., IA, Findagrave #24143831.

News of the Courts
Justice Dunnington yesterday morning found William E. Law, who was arrested at a ranch 35 miles southeast of Colorado Springs last Saturday, guilty of nonsupport. Later in the day Law’s wife, Florence M. Law, filed an answer and a cross complaint to her husband’s suit for divorce in the district court, and Law filed a replication to the cross complaint of his wife.
In the proceedings before Justice Dunnington, Law was put under bond to pay $15 a month into court for the support of his wife and child. The bond was furnished by his parents. Mrs. Law told officers of Justice Dunnington’s court yesterday morning that she was married once before – to a man name McCutcheon – when she was only 15 years old. She was divorced from him, she said. Her parents live somewhere in Texas, but she does not know where, as no letters have passed between them for some time.
In the answer and cross complaint which she filed in the district court, Mrs. Law denied all the allegations of cruelty made in the complaint filed by her husband, alleged cruelty on his part, asked for a divorce and for the custody of their 2-year old son, and asked that permanent alimony be awarded her. Law, in his replication, denied the allegations of cruelty made in his wife’s complaint.
The Laws were married June 26, 1911.
William Eugene Law and Florence Melissa Derry were divorced on 21 July 1914 at El Paso Co., CO. William Eugene Law married Evelyn Dolores Poe on 20 December 1916 at Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., CO. After several years working for Waterloo Industries, he began his career at John Deere. He worked in several capacities at Deere’s over the years, retiring on September 30, 2014.
