Cecile Lovelace Bergwall

Nov. 30, 1911 - March 21, 2005

At her request, no services are planned for Cecile Lovelace Bergwall, who died in Santa Cruz on March 21, 2005, at the age of 93. Cecile was born in Dinuba, California, on November 30, 1911. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1934, the same place and year she met and married Phillip H. Bergwall of Vallejo. Cecile obtained a teaching certificate in 1935 and taught for a short time in Oakland. The couple then moved to Vallejo, where Phillip was an engineer at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. They built their first home on Napa Street in 1938-39. Between 1949-52, they built their permanent home on Rincon Way. After Phillip died in 1970, Cecile remained in her Vallejo home until 2000, at which time she moved to Santa Cruz to be near her two grown children.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Cecile enjoyed traveling in foreign countries, in Europe and Southeast Asia, and visiting Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong. An active volunteer for many years, Cecile served on the board of the Friends of the Vallejo Library, and volunteered weekly at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum. She also loved and supported the Vallejo Symphony. Cecile appreciated fine art and visited numerous museums in the Bay Area and during her travels abroad. Cecile enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and was always ready for a party. All agreed she was a most capable and gracious hostess.
Cecile is survived by her son, John P. Bergwall and partner Gillian Greensite of Santa Cruz; her daughter, Ann Terry and husband Jerry of Rancho Mirage, CA; her grandson, Michael Terry, and wife Elizabeth; her great-grandsons, Nicholas and Brendan Terry of Santa Monica; her sister-in-law, Mimi Bergwall Fitzpatrick of Bodega Bay; and many nieces and nephews. Note: Article from The Alta Pioneers by Harry Hurst

Rabbit Hunters
Many sportsman throughout the valley during the winter months made a business of shooting jack rabbits for the San Francisco market. During the fall and winter of 1895-96, Albert and Guy Lovelace shipped from two to six sacks of rabbits each morning from the depot at Traver. For the ninety days in February, March and April they shipped 10,467 rabbits.
These hunters worked six days a week, and their work was done in the Traver and Cross Creek country. A record kept by them for this particular period which was published at the time follows:

Rabbits killed, 10,467.
Missed one out of every eight.
Best record, 58 straight.
Poorest record, missed seven straight.
Ninety-five out of every hundred shot on the run.
Shot used, 750 pounds.

Note: This article was provided to me by Rosalie Logan of the Sequoia Genealogical Society. In an accompaning note she said. ". . . rabbit hunts were so popular in Tulare County. They were quite overpopulated that the residents had to get rid of them. And then rabbit became quite popular in the San Francisco Restaurants."

Bessie Elizabeth Lovell1

F, b. 23 December 1893, d. 6 October 1988
Bessie Elizabeth Lovell was born on 23 December 1893 at Petroleum, Wells Co., IN, Bessie apparently lived and died believing her birth year was 1892, as reflected in her narration of her biography as quoted below. However the 1900 census is quite clear and the 1892 birth year is not possible with her sister Nina having been born in May of that year. DLB 2018.1 She was the daughter of Lewis Alan Lovell and Elizabeth Catherine Nutter.1 Bessie Elizabeth Lovell married Fred LeRoy Silvers, son of Lewis Parker Silvers and Adaline Cecelia Fisher, in 1909. Bessie Elizabeth Lovell died on 6 October 1988 at Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 94 Biography (Findagrave.com):

As told by Bessie Elizabeth (Lovell) Silvers to her daughter, Alpha Lee (Silvers) [Hansard] Day on July 5th, 1984:

I was born in Petroleum, a small town just out of Bluffton, Indiana, December 23, 1892. At the age of six, my family moved to Michigan about five miles out of Manton in with my grandparent Nutter. We soon moved into a house that belonged to grandad Lovell and lived there until I was 16 and married Fred L. Silvers. This was 1909 and Fred and I moved to Montpelier, Indiana and lived with his folks for a short time. We then moved to Sabo, near Kiefer, Oklahoma.

Floyd was born in this small house and soon after his birth our house burned down and all his baby clothing was lost, as well as everything else. While he was still a small child, we moved to Gray's Corner, just out of Lawrenceville, Illinois. Here Alpha was born and we lived there until Buss was a little boy at which time we traveled by train to Wirt, Oklahoma. This was about 1917. We really lived in a small one-room house located on a company lease. During the Summertime I would take all you children wherever your Dad was working and in the Summer we lived in a big tent near Loco, Oklahoma within sight of the oil well where Fred worked.

About 1919 we moved near Healdton, out toward Wilson and lived in the country. This is where Floyd and Alpha started to school. Jack was born here, January 19, 1920. While Jack was very little, we all moved to Commanche and again we moved out near the well where Dad worked (near Lindsy) and again lived in a very large tent. This is where Floyd learned to read the road side signs - "Bad curve, slow down" - and Floyd said "Bed covers, Snow Brown."

After that Summer in the country, we moved to the Smally Lease, a short distance from Healdton. Our house was 12' x 24', and during this time, Aunt Grace and her three small boys moved in with us because she had no place else to go. The floor, by night, was rows of little boys. A total of ten people lived in this house and it did not seem a problem at that time. I just stepped over the kids and got my work done.

Then Dad left for South America in 1925 and Jack was five years old. Soon after that, 1926 or 1927, we moved into our first big house - the big blue house - out on the road and we lived there and attended Healdton schools until we moved to Stillwater in 1933 just in time for the fall semester of College for Floyd and Alpha.

In 1935, Alpha graduated from College, Buss from High School, and Jack from Junior High all on the same day, and Floyd graduated the semester after that.

After this time, each of you went your own way living in various places.

She was buried in October 1988 at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Los Angeles Co., CA, Findagrave #62954425.
