Highway Workman
Killed Wednesday
Car of Pennsylvania Naval
Officer Beyond Driver's
W.C. McCune Victim
Driver and Hitch-Hiking
Rider Uninjured As Auto
William C. McCune, 46, state highway worker and a resident of this community until two weeks ago, was fatally injured, at a few minutes past 10:30 o'clock, Wednesday morning, when struck by an auto while working on a tile ditch at the roadside of U.S. Route 22, just east of the bend in the road at the T.C. Gooley farm, a mile and a half east of town. Death came about 15 minutes after he was struck.
The accident which brought his untimely death was of a very unusual nature.
William B. Hardin, 38, an officer from the U.S. Naval Yards at Philadelphia, Pa., was the driver of the car, a Ford V-8 sedan, which struck McCune. He was enroute to Louisville, Ky., to visit a brother who is ill. Frank Meade, 56, a hitch-hiker from Dusquene, Ark., was riding with Hardin at the time.
In attempting to pass a David Davies refrigerator meat truck, also headed west, Hardin lost control of his car, it cantering to the left side and off the highway, in front of the small tenant house on the Gooley farm, where McCune was working.
Funeral Here On Friday
Funeral rites for Mr. McCune will be held at the M.E. church here, Friday, at 2:00 o'clock p.m., with Rev. W.B. Rose, of Williamsport, officiating. Burial will be made in the New Holland cemetery by the Kirk firm.
The radiator of the skidding car hit McCune squarely in the back, hurling him several feet into the air. After striking the victim, the Ford careened into a pile of dirt, turned a complete somersault in the air and hit on its top, across the ditch where tile were being laid and astride the fence.
Two other highway employees were working with McCune at the time, one jumping the fence to escape the auto, while the second was barely touched by the uncontrolled car.
Mr. McCune was carried into the nearby house, occupied by H.R. Davis and family, where he died a few minutes later, just after the arrival of the Kirk ambulance and Dr. Charles Davis.
Hardin and the second rider in the Ford were uninjured with the exception of a small cut across the hitch-hiker's nose.
The driver of the truck which Hardin was attempting to pass saw the accident occuring alongside his vehicle and brought it to an abrupt hault.
Various witnesses of the fatality have different opinions in the accident. Hardin told Sheriff Radcliff, who arrived on the scene about an hour later, he was driving about 40 miles an hour and could not account for the car getting out of control. The hitch-hiker, likewise estimated the speed of the Ford at about 40 miles, while the two workmen with McCune believed its speed was greater than that.
The body of the victim was taken to the Kirk funeral parlors to be prepared for burial and the car, which was but little damaged, was towed in by the Stewart & White garage.
Hardin accompanied Sheriff Radcliff back to Circleville, where he was held pending complete investigation. Meade was allowed to resume his hitch-hiking to Cincinnati.
William Creighton McCune, who had spent his entire life in the Pickaway-Fayette county area, was a son of David C. and Josephine McCune, also long residents of this vicinity.
He had engaged in farming during the greater part of his life and about two years ago became an employee of the state highway department.
He was a devoted father of a family of six children and was known as an ardent laborer, loyal father and husband and a citizen of a likeable reserved disposition.
The McCune family moved from the Webber C. French farm, south of town, to Circleville, two weeks ago Wednesday, so that Mr. McCune would be closer to his highway work in this county.
Besides his wife, Jane Price McCune, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac E. Price, of the Smidley road, he is survived by his father, six children and five brothers.
The children are: Forrest, who with his wife resides with Miss Lillie and Strawd Briggs; Mrs. Annalee Elliott, of Washington C.H; Mildred, Lucille, Donna Mae and Donald Ray, at home. The latter two children are twins.
Surviving brothers are: Leland, a mechanic at the Stewart & White garage; Elmer, of Clarksburg; Charles, of Columbus; Herman, of Wilmington; and Homer, of Hazard, Ky.

He was buried in November 1934 at New Holland Cemetery, New Holland, Pickaway Co., OH, Findagrave #80093783.

Kin Of Michael Collins To Wed Here Tomorrow

Patsy's Family Connected With Irish Free State Creator - Descendant Of Calhoun.

Daughter of The Maryland Free State Will Become Mrs. Joseph J. Rutledge.

"Princess Pat," daughter of the Irish Free State and the Maryland Free State weds here tomorrow.

Her friends are as numerous as may be expected when a girl is 18 years old, a pretty blonde and one of eight children, six sisters and two brothers. And each one of these friends is on the qui vive for the event.

Patsy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. McCurry, who live in the Maryland Country Club section. Standing beside her at the alter will be Joseph J. Rutledge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Rutledge of Winfield avenue, Forest Park.

Descendant of Calhoun

Through her paternal grandmother, a Virginia Calhoun, the bride-elect is a descendant of John C. Calhoun, the American statesman, while through her mother she bears kinship to Michael Collins, martyred Irish statesman and soldier, who was associated with Arthur Griffith in creation of the Irish Free State.

The wedding will take place with a nuptial mass at 9 A.M. at St. Charles Catholic Church, Pikesville, and the Rev. Ambrose Beavans, the pastor, will conduct the services.

Miss Lillian Josephine McCurry, sister of the bride-elect will be maid-of-honor, and Miss May Grant flower girl. William P. Arledge, of Dallas, Texas, will serve as best man. The ushers will be Wade Franklin Rutledge, brother of the groom-to-be, and J. George Bobb.

The best man is the fiancé of a sister of Miss McCurry. A double wedding had been proposed, but it was said Patsy's mother protested she was losing her daughters via matrimony fast enough one at a time.

A wedding breakfast will be served at the home of the bride's parents after the ceremony. The couple then will leave on a trip to New York and Niagara Falls.

The bride-elect attended school at the Convent of the Visitation and at St. Thomas' School. She is a graduate of the latter.

The couple will be "at home" at Berkeley and Millwood Avenues, Mount Washington, after May 13. The home tops the list of wedding presents.

Alphonso Burch McDaniel was born on 4 February 1878 at Dunreath, Marion Co., IA.1 He was the son of Edgar McDaniel and Elmira Jane Farris.1 As of 1900, Alphonso Burch McDaniel was also known as Alphonso B. McDonald; reason for change from "McDaniel" to "McDonald", is not known, but it appears to have parallelled the same change in his father's surname. Alphonso was listed in the 1900 census as McDonald, but in 1910 was again listed as McDaniel. In 1920 and thereafter he was McDonald. DLB 2012.2 He lived on 11 June 1900 at Cedar Twp., Calhoun Co., IA, living with the Frank Kropf family, with Jessie P. McLain also in the household (Frank was her sister Maud's husband).3 He married Jessie Pearl McLain, daughter of Abram McLain and Sarah Regina Doughty, on 23 June 1900 at Greene Co., IA, married as "C. G. McDonald" and "Pearl McLain."
Note: A Marion County, Iowa, marriage record shows an Alonzo Banister McDaniel marriage to Florence B. B. Baker in February, 1896. Cannot find any evidence of such an Alonzo or Florence McDaniel in 1900 or 1910 censuses. Alphonso "McDonald" is shown as single in the 1900 census -- not sure what it means, if anything.
