MARGARET McLEOD HENDREN

Margaret McLeod Hendren died peacefully at home Saturday October 4,2003, just a month shy of her 105th birthday. A celebration of thanksgiving will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, October 15, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, she would be pleased by a remembrance to St. Paul's Church, St. Luke's Hospital or the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Mrs. Hendren was born November 8, 1898, in New Orleans, LA, to Elizabeth and William McLeod. Because of her academic achievement in high school, she graduated at age 16. Deemed too young to enter college, she took a postgraduate year in Athens, GA. She then entered Newcomb College of Tulane University, majoring in music. An accomplished pianist, she gave many individual recitals. Her musical interests were broad and at one time she accompanied the popular jazz group, "Six and Seven Eights." She received the honor of being made a member of Mu Phi Epsilon, the national music society. She was a longtime, loyal member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

In 1923, Margaret married William Hardy Hendren Jr. They had three children, Margaret Hendren Lombardi, Dr. William Hardy Hendren, and Carol Hendren Robb.

In 1933, they moved to Kansas City, where Mr. Hendren became the president of United Film.

Margaret was a member of St. Paul's Altar Guild, St. Luke's Auxiliary, and a 40-year volunteer docent at the Nelson Gallery, Docent Emeritae and Society of Fellows. She was a member of the Junior League. In 2002, she was saluted for her 73 years of membership in the Junior League, and was recently recognized as the oldest living member of the Kansas City Country Club.

Margaret is survived by her two children and their spouses, Hardy and Eleanor Hendren of Boston, Carol and Bruce Robb of Kansas City.

Dr. Hendren is distinguished professor of surgery, Harvard Medical School and emeritus chief of surgery at Children's Hospital in Boston, She has 16 grandchildren. Dr. Hendren's children are Douglas Hardy Hendren, M.D., William Grant Hendren, M.D., Robert Bruce Hendren, M.D., and David Frasier Hendren. Margaret Lombardi's children are Lucy Evans, David Lombardi, and Kimball Lombardi. Carol Robb's children are Melanie McLeod Smith, Adam Bruce Robb, and Margaret Adele O'Neill. Altogether, there are 22 great-grandchildren.


As the matriarch of many, her memory will be cherished for her intelligence, her sharp sense of humor, her consideration of others, and her staunch, Scottish fortitude.

Opal L. Emmert, 85, passed away Friday, September 4, 2009 at Perry Lutheran Home in Perry, Iowa.

Opal Leigh was born October 25, 1923 in Melbourne, Missouri, the daughter of Leora and Arthur McLey. At the age of 12 her family moved to Booneville, Iowa and later to rural Waukee, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1941. On January 20, 1943 she was united in marriage to Dale Emmert. They made their home at their farm in rural Minburn where they have lived 66 years. Opal was a home maker and a longtime member of Minburn United Methodist Church. She also volunteered for the Red Cross and the Woodward State Hospital. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.

Opal is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dale; three children, Darrell (Nancy) Emmert of Adel, Linda (Bill) Brueck of Chatfield, MN and Mark Emmert of Minburn; eight grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Young of Des Moines and Karen (Ronald) Main of Camden Point, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Aaron; and a brother Francis.

She was buried in September 2009 at Brethren Cemetery, Dallas Center, Dallas Co., IA, Findagrave #41619725.
