The Rev. Garrett Lee Melvin, 94, formerly of Greenfield, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Willow Rose Rehab and Healthcare Center in Jerseyville.

He was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Greenfield,IL to Maurice L. and Faye M. (Gary) Melvin. He married Alta Steckel in Greenfield,IL in 1950 and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sisters: Margery Hankins of Greenfield,IL and Mary (Don) Fox of Godfrey,IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Francile Stone and Mildred Melvin; and brothers, Gary Melvin and Maurice J. Melvin.

Garrett served his country in the U.S. Air force during WWII. He was an American Baptist minister, having been ordained in Oklahoma in 1977. He served at the former Pleasant Point Church north of Greenfield and several other area churches. He served as the west regional director for the Underground Evangelism, an organization that distributed Bibles behind the "Iron Curtain." He was a Doctor of Chiropractic, receiving his license in 1957, and practiced in Illinois, Oklahoma and Missouri. He enjoyed playing his harmonica and enjoyed being in the Sunshine Band from Jerseyville,IL, horseback riding, and sharing a good joke.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield until time of funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Oak Wood Cemetery, north of Greenfield. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

Margery Ruth Hankins, 103, of Greenfield died Friday, April 19, 2019 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born July 10, 1915 in Greenfield, IL to Maurice and Fay (Gary) Melvin. She married Melvin Dixon Hankins on October 27, 1937 in Greenfield.

Surviving are three daughters, Sue Hopper of League City, TX, Nancy Arebalo and Becky Columbo both of Georgetown, TX. Four grandchildren, Dane (Beth) Fricker, Susan (Bill) Lenaway, Danny (Terri) Tool, and Debra Tool. Six great-grandchildren, Rachel Fricker, Riley & Ethan Lenaway, Lissa & Jake Sexton, and Bryar Tool 3 great-great-grandchildren, Nora, Sawyer, & Sophia, and one sister, Mary (Don)Fox of Godfrey, IL. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sisters, Francile Stone and Mildred Melvin, brothers, Maurice, Gary, and Garrett Lee Melvin, a grandson, Mark Fricker, and 3 sons-in-law, Michael Arebalo, Bill Hopper, and Raymond Columbo.

Marge was a farm wife and homemaker and volunteered for several organizations. She was an active member of the Greenfield United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Club. She was quite a lady (one of a kind) and was able to live in her own home until departing this earthly life.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 11 AM at the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield, IL. Visitation will be from 9 AM until time of funeral on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. Burial will follow at the Oak Wood Cemetery north of Greenfield. Memorials are suggested to the Greenfield United Methodist Church, the Greenfield Public Library or the donor's choice.

She was buried in April 2019 at Oakwood Cemetery, Greenfield, Greene Co., IL, Findagrave #44527210.

Whitehall, Township 11 Range 10, Greene Co., IL, farming, wife Elizabeth and children Sylvester, George, Edgar, Emma, and Mamie in the household. A child "Allis", ie. Alice, age 12 is listed in the census, but she was not listed in 1860 and was not likely a biological child o Thomas and Elizabeth.2
