DEATHS

Dr. John E. Meisenhelder

Dr. John Elmer Meisenhelder, for nearly 30 years a prominent physician in Hanover, died Thursday morning at 2:35 o'clock at his home.

Dr. Meisenhelder was taken ill last September 15. He was removed to Union Memorial hospital, Baltimore, and remained there until the latter part of November, when he returned to his home in Hanover.

Doctor Meisenhelder, who was a member of a family in which many of the members undertook the practice of medicine, was aged 56 years. Complications were given as the cause of death.

He was born in East Berlin, the son of Dr. Robert Nebinger Meisenhelder and Alice (Lentz) Meisenhelder, the former having been a brother of the late Dr. Edmund W. Meisenhelder, of York.

He attended Gettysburg preparatory school and graduated from Pennsylvania college at Gettysburg in 1897. He was graduated from Johns Hopkins university, Baltimore, in 1902, and served his internship at Moses Taylor hospital, Scranton. For a number of years the deceased served on the staff at the Soldiers' home in Washington, D.C.

In the years 1909 and 1910 Dr. Meisenhelder studied abroad, spending two years in Vienna, Berlin and London. He returned to Hanover in 1910 and was a practicing physician in that borough until the time of his death. A member of the Hanover Medical association and the York County Medical association, Doctor Meisenhelder served on the staff of the Hanover General hospital.

Associated with the national fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, the deceased served as historian of the general council of that fraternity, and was president of the Alpha province of the same fraternity. He was also a member of the athletic council of Gettysburg college at the time of his death.

Doctor Meisenhelder was an Episcopalian. He was also a member of the Hanover lodge, B. P. O. Elks, and the Hanover Arcadian club.

Surviving are his wife, Ida, a stepdaughter, Mary Elizabeth Shirk, and four cousins, Dr. Edmund W. Meisenhelder, "Edgehill," near York; Attorney Samuel B. Meisenhelder and Mary E. Meisenhelder, York, and the Rev. Robert L. Meisenhelder, Harrisburg, who preached the funeral sermon, and of the Rev. John S. Tome, paster of St. Mark's Lutheran church, Hanover, who made the prayer and pronounced the benediction. The simple service of the Lutheran church was used.

Interment was made in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Hanover.

Note: There are several large articles describing the estate (valued at $25,000 in 1933) of John Elmer Meisenhelder that he bequeathed to Gettysburg College, the Hoffman Orphanage near Littlestown and the Tressler Orphans' Home at Loysville.

Died, at his late residence in east Macon, July 3d, 1894, Joseph Mellin, aged 67 years. Mr. Mellin
was born in Ireland, county Antrim, in 1828. His father died when he was but 7 years of age; he
was left in charge of a goodly uncle. The early instructions were strictly of a religious character,
brought up under the influence and fostering care of the Presbyterian church, of which this uncle
was a member. In 1851, Mr. Mellin left Ireland and came to America, and settled in Livingston
County, N.Y. In the autumn of 1865, he moved to Lenawee County, Mich. in Macon township, and
has remained in this county and township until called, away by death, July 3d, 1894. He was
married to Miss Rosa Boyd, in 1849, who survives him. Their family consisted of ten children, four
of whom are still living. Mr. Mellin had many friends; a man of exceeding tender feelings himself;
he very carefully avoided injuring the feelings of others. His entire life has been marked by this
characteristic. Useful and beloved in his neighborhood, kind and gentle in his family, he has
passed a busy and quiet life. Strictly attentive to his worldly concerns, he has acquired a
competence for his loved ones who are left behind, of worldly goods sufficient to meet all wants
without lack of anything. In his death, the Reformed Church of East Macon, (known as the
DeSpelder Church) has lost a valuable elder. He was among its first organizers; has always been
ready by influence and pecuniary support, to extend the influence and usefulness of this, the
church of his choice. His sickness was protracted and very severe; at times his bodily sufferings
were very great, but not a murmur escaped his lips. A spirit of perfect resignation was manifested
throughout, and on the evening of July 3d his happy spirit took its flight to the God who gave it.
While one of his daughters sat beside him, he breathed an audible prayer and while in this act he
closed his eyes in death and without a sigh or tremor, passed away in the twinkling of an eye. His
funeral was attended from the DeSpelder Church by a large concourse of neighbors and friends,
attesting the fact of the estimation of all for the life and friendship of Joseph Mellin. His end was peace. "Blessed are the dead which die is the Lord from henceforth."
