Gene Sholl Miller of Palmyra passed away peacefully Saturday, July 10, 2010, in Pomona, from complications due to diabetes. He was 80.
He was the beloved husband of 55 years to Joan (Yannarella).
He was a 1949 graduate of Burlington City High School.
Gene was a longtime resident of both Delanco and Tabernacle. He and his wife, Joan currently resided in retirement in Hammonton.
He was a former member of Dobbins Memorial Methodist Church of Delanco.
After serving his country as a decorated war veteran in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, he received the Purple Heart for being wounded in battle with six Battle Stars. He was attached to the U.S. Army 9th Corp, 229 Signal Company, and was a part of the initial landing at Inchon in North Korea and the battle to recapture Seoul, under General Douglas MacArthur, crossed the 38th parallel to defeat the North Koreans, fought the Chinese attack across the Yalu River into N. Korea and fought at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.
He followed his family trade as a carpenter by becoming a carpenter apprentice and joined the Carpenters Union in the Burlington Local 1489. He was a union carpenter for more than 50 years and helped to construct the first ten casinos in Atlantic City in the late 70's and early 80's.
His interests included family outings, cars, boats, fine dining, bus trips and day trips to Atlantic City with his wife, Joan. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Burlington Post 79.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Gene J. and his wife, Maria, of Shamong; his three beautiful grandchildren, Kristin Anne Girard and her husband, Greg, Gregory John, and Katie Marie; a brother, Hugh Miller and his wife, Virginia; and three beloved nephews, Jack, Ricky, and Tommy Yannarella and their wives. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rene Callahan (Sholl) and brother, Warren Miller.
Friends may visit from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14 at the Chadwick Memorial Home, 154 Webster Street, Riverside, where his memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Monument Cemetery, Beverly.

His survivors are: a son Fred J. of Polo; two grandchildren, George and Barbara Miller; a sister, Mrs. Alice Phillips of Goshen, Ind; and two brothers, Harvey of Goshen and William of Elkhart, Ind.
