WILLIAM JAMES MITCHELL

Funeral services for William James Mitchell, 81, 2406 Grand Blvd., will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Nelson funeral home.

The Rev. Doyle Hansen will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Mr. Mitchell was found dead in his home Sunday morning. He died about 3 a.m. apparently of a heart attack.

He was born in Oyne Aberdenshire (sic), Scotland, on April 21, 1883, the son of William and Anna Mitchell.

He was married to Lillie Marie Douhan on Dec. 23, 1911, in Hudson, Wis. They made their home in Cedar Falls since 1934.

Mr. Mitchell was a retired tailor.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters. Mrs. Bruce (Mona) Place, 1009 W. 3rd St., and Mrs. George (Mavis) Gersema, Rt. 3; one son, William James Mitchell Jr., a professor at Bates College in Lewiston, Me; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was buried on 2 September 1964 at Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk Co., IA, per obituary.

She was preceded in death by Parents Edward and Martha Clews Mitchell, Husband George Gilmore Duncan, son Michael Joseph, sisters Esther Beck, Florence Hill and Elsie Giles, and Brother Lawrence Mitchell.

Wilma and George were married in 1936 In Minnesota and moved to Oregon in 1946. Wilma had a full life as the mother of four children, and as wife and business partner with husband George in several business ventures as well as farming in Minnesota, Oregon and British Columbia, Canada. Throughout her life Wilma was independent and forthright. In her later years, as a single woman, she moved to the Hermiston area where she lived for more than 30 years. She spent her time creating unique quilts, playing pool in a league, gardening, attending the huge Mitchell family reunions and enjoying her extended family and many friends.

The family wishes to give special thanks to cousins Joyce Rollins and Gail and Ron Perry who kept the sisters and the local family together and to Avren Childers for her devotion and support to her great grandmother throughout the years

Wilma will be interred in Olney cemetery, Pendleton, OR, 11AM Monday, November 24th 2014.

She was buried in November 2014 at Olney Cemetery, Pendleton, Umatilla Co., OR.
