Karen wore several titles; as a civilian she was known as Reverend Doctor Karen T. Chrisley, and she was known as Chaplain, Lt. Colonel Karen T. Chrisley in the Air Force. Karen was the third woman of the United Methodist Church to enter the U.S.A.F. Chaplaincy; first woman Chaplain to be a member of an observation flying crew; was on the committee which instituted measures to acknowledge and deal with the issue of domestic violence; instituted and then trained other Chaplains in the ministry to persons with AIDS and published articles on hospital ministry.
She is survived by her husband, Reverend David W. Yingling, daughter, Ms. Kelsey A. Chrisley of Tustin, California, employed by the Orange County Public Law Library, daughter, Reverend Doctor Hillary A. Chrisley, senior pastor at the Santa Barbara United Methodist Church, her husband Reverend Todd Schmidt, a son, Ronald L. Chrisley, Ph.D. professor at the University of Sussex, U.K., grandson, Coleman K. Chrisley Schmidt. She also leaves behind the children of her husband whom she honors, Jarrod Yingling and Jody Coughlin and their families, an uncle, Donald S. And Joy Matheney of Carroll, Ohio, and an aunt, Freda Moody of Newark, Ohio.
From the time she was a child, Reverend Chrisley served Christ through the United Methodist Church. She was ordained I the West Ohio Conference as a minister in 1975 and commissioned as an United Methodist Chaplain serving in the U.S.A.F. Disabled by cancer, she retired from the U.S.A.F. after 21 years, and then the church after 30 years of itinerant ministry. Her vision was to follow her church’s founder (John Wesley) words of the ‘world is my parish.’
Memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2007 in the Enon United Methodist Church with pastor Chris Farmer officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a United Methodist Church of your choice.
