Florence K. Bareford1

F, b. 1913, d. 13 February 2012
Florence K. Bareford was born in 1913 at Downingtown, Chester Co., PA.1 She was the daughter of John Pollock Bareford and Ethel Bernice Mower.1 Florence K. Bareford married Lambert A. McGuckin. Florence K. Bareford died on 13 February 2012 at Downingtown, Chester Co., PA, Obituary (findagrave.com):

Florence Bareford McGuckin, passed away on February 13, 2012, of natural causes at the age of 98.

She was the daughter of the late John P. Bareford and Ethel Mower Bareford and was the wife of the late Lambert A. McGuckin.

Florence was a graduate of Downingtown High School and Drexel University. She began her working career at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Surgical Outpatient Department where she worked as a secretary for six years. The work was very interesting and the doctors and patients she worked with provided her many funny stories she loved to share with her family. Although she really enjoyed her job at the hospital she took a position at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr for a much larger salary. Her three years there were interesting and fun and she hated to leave but an illness and operation forced her to find work close to home. She took a position at the Downingtown National Bank until her health improved two years later. Florence then decided to help the war effort and joined the Navy as a WAVE. After basic training, Florence went to San Padro, California to serve her country. When her mother died, she went home to Downingtown for the funeral and on the train trip back to California she met her handsome soldier named Lambert. He was on his way to California to be shipped to Japan and he informed her that he was going to marry her. Luckily the war ended and they were married and honorably discharged from the service. They moved to Norwalk, Ohio for a short time then back to Downingtown to make their permanent home and so Florence could take care of her widowed father. Florence then took a job at Texas Eastern in Eagle, for four years while her husband went to school to be a machinist. When Lambert and Howard Lewis Pyle started McGuckin and Pyle Machine Shop, Florence quit her job at Texas Eastern and did the bookwork for the new business. Florence was active in the American Red Cross and helped with many bloodmobiles throughout the country. She was honored and proud to receive the Clara Barton Award for her work with the Red Cross during the blizzard of 1958. Florence stayed at the Methodist Church for days during the storm to help people who were without shelter or food because of the heavy snow. She was also a member of the Women's Club of Downingtown and taught adult Sunday school for many years at the Downingtown Methodist Church. She also served as the organist at the church and enjoyed playing the organ at many weddings in the area. As if that wasn't enough to do, she was also involved with the Girl Scouts and was the cookie chairman for many years. Her training as a camp counselor at Camp Innabah as a teenager really helped with her Girl Scout duties and organizing the hundreds of boxes of cookies in her living room every year.

Florence is survived by her son John McGuckin and his wife Kristin of Downingtown and her daughter Mina Mowrer of Guthriesville with whom she lived; her grandsons Andrew Mowrer and his wife Beverly of Coatesville and Joshua McGuckin of Broomfield, Colorado; her granddaughters Amy Kabatt and her husband Daniel of Glenmoore and Megan McGuckin of Washington, D.C. Florence was also lucky and very happy to have a great-granddaughter Alia Kabatt of Glenmoore whom she adored. She will also be missed by her sister Lillian Simmons of Wilmington, Delaware, two nieces and two nephews.

Lillian M. Bareford1

F, b. 12 September 1915, d. 4 January 2013
Lillian M. Bareford was born on 12 September 1915 at Downingtown, Chester Co., PA.1 She was the daughter of John Pollock Bareford and Ethel Bernice Mower.1 Lillian M. Bareford married Samuel Frank Simmons circa 1938. Lillian M. Bareford lived in 2012 at Wilmington, New Castle Co., DE. She died on 4 January 2013 at age 97 Obituary (findagrave.com):

Age 97, passed away at home, of natural causes, attended by her family. Lillian's famously nimble mind endured until two days before her death.

Lillian grew up in Downingtown, PA, the daughter of John Pollock Bareford and Ethel Mower Bareford. She earned her BA from Drexel University, Class of '36, then moved to Lancaster County PA for her first teaching job. Her career in the classroom was put on hold after she married and began her second career as a busy mother. When her five children were older, she taught part-time at Padua Academy in Wilmington, and also at the NC County Correctional Institute, the old "workhouse" that stood at Price's Corner.

Lillian was known for her vitality and her unwavering good cheer. Through the month before her death, she was driving her car around town to play bridge at Claymore Center, to gather with friends at the TOPS Club, and to attend her beloved church, Richardson Park United Methodist. Until a few years ago, she volunteered as cashier at the Richardson Park Community Action Program, and, in the summer, swam leisurely laps at the Crestmoor Pool.

At her home in Richardson Park, which she occupied for 63 years, Lillian enjoyed playing the piano, reciting poetry, reading mysteries and the classics, knitting lap robes for the Veterans' Hospital, solving crosswords (in ink), pampering her cats and her African violets, and keeping score while following the Phillies games. She was a lifelong Phillies fan.

While Lillian loved teaching, she loved learning even more. Her passion for knowledge, together with her flawless memory, made her a formidable Jeopardy player. One or more of her children always joined her at her home for the daily Jeopardy broadcast.

Lillian was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Samuel F. Simmons, Sr. who died in 1989; by her son Samuel F. Simmons, Jr (2002); and by her only sibling, her older sister Florence McGuckin, who passed away in 2012.

Lillian will be greatly missed by her loving children: daughter Anne Sewell (husband Earl), son John Simmons, daughter Mary Jane Simmons, all residing near Richardson Park; son Bob Simmons (Michelle) of Pennsville NJ; daughter Kathy Simmons (wife of Sam Jr) of Ellijay, GA. Lillian was adored by her grandchildren: Joseph "Joey" Soltow (Stephanie) of Hockessin DE; Mark Soltow (Barbara) of Elkton MD; Michael Soltow (Mariela) of Abingdon MD; Karen Simmons of Decatur GA; Amy Lendach (Mick) of Raleigh NC; David Simmons (Jill) of San Diego CA; Rachel Simmons (Peter Chrustowski) of Pennsville; Leah Simmons of Pennsville; Bethany Simmons (Jake Baker) of Berkeley CA; Jacqui Gambacorta (Justin) of Milltown DE. Lillian is survived by 12 great-grandchildren, 3 grand-dogs, numerous Simmons and McGuckin nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 26, at Richardson Park United Methodist Church, 11 North Maryland Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19804. Lillian's family will greet visitors at the church beginning at 9:30 am, and the service will begin at 11 am. Burial services at Gracelawn Memorial Park will be private.

She was buried in January 2013 at Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, New Castle Co., DE, Find A Grave Memorial# 103443556.
