Samuel Mumma
M, b. 8 November 1791, d. 6 December 1876
Samuel Mumma was born on 8 November 1791 at Lancaster Co., PA. He was the son of Jacob Henry Mumma and Elizabeth Newcomer Hertzler.1 Samuel Mumma married Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Daniel Miller and Catherine Funk, on 15 November 1833 at Washington Co., MD.1 Samuel Mumma died on 6 December 1876 at Washington Co., MD, at age 85 They lived on part of the original John Miller homestead, land which became part of the Antietam Battlefield and their buildings were burned by the Confederates early in the engagement.
"Mr. Samuel Mumma, Jr., a son of Samuel Mumma Sr., resided in the Mumma buildings, near the Dunker Church that were burned by the Confederates after they had been driven from them, to keep the Union sharp-shooters from using them. Mr. Mumma said every thing except a few small trinkets they took with them was burned. Some of the daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Grove of this place and Miss Allie Mumma, said when they were told to leave, a Confederate soldier who wanted to be gallant offered his assistance in helping them over the fence, but they were too angry because they had to leave and refused his assistance. They went to the Hoffman farm and then near the Manor church. A report was circulated that the Confederates had put salt in the spring at the farm, but Mr. Mumma said his father had been to Hagerstown the day before and brought several sacks of salt home and put them on a floor above the spring and when the building burned the salt fell into the spring. Mr. Mumma's family went to the Sherrick farm after the battle to live, Mr. Sherrick moving to Boonesboro, Md." O. T. Reilly
The land on which this church building stood was conveyed Feb. 2, 1851 by Samuel Mumma and wife "to Joseph Wolf, John S. Rowland, Samuel Fahrney, Jacob Reichard, Samuel Emmert, John W. Stouffer, and Valentine Reichard, deacons of the church, who called themselves Brethren, commonly known as Dunkers" for church purposes.
"After the battle, Mr. Samuel Mumma, Jr., said his father dragged 55 dead horses from their farm to the East Woods where they burned them. One battery alone had 26 horses killed near the Dunker church." O. T. Reilly
Mr. Mumma was a successful farmer and also served as a Commissioner of Washington County.2
