HARRISBURG Joyce Barnes Snyder, 69, died on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Hospice of Central Pennsylvania Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Hanover Hospital on January 11, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth Barnes. She was a 1958 graduate of Littlestown High School and a 1962 graduate of Millersville University. Joyce taught in the Fairfax Virginia School District for several years before starting a family. A long-time volunteer for Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, Joyce served as both a caregiver and as a chairperson of the organization's annual Tree of Light giving campaign. In 1998 she and her husband, Albert Snyder, were the first couple to be awarded the annual A. Thomas Andrews Founders Award in recognition of their dedicated service to Hospice. On December 10, 2007, the mayor of Harrisburg declared the day 'Joyce Snyder Day' in honor of her 20 years of leadership for the annual Tree of Light campaign. In addition to her loving husband of 48 years, surviving are her two sons, Michael A. Snyder of Mason, Ohio, and Mark A. Snyder of Washington, D.C; three daughters, Jodie S. Kitchens of Richmond, Va., Julie S. Blanker of Orangeburg, N.Y., and Jaime A. Snyder of Syracuse, N.Y; and nine adoring grandchildren. Joyce was a long-time member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Hershey, and the Harrisburg Bridge Club. She enjoyed playing with several bridge groups, participating in book clubs, having lunch with her many wonderful friends, and most of all, spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 A.M. in her church at 359 West Areba Ave., Hershey. Interment services will immediately follow in the Hershey Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a reception following the services.
