There are 26 grchildren, 18 gr-grandchildren, and 2 gr-gr-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Nazarene Church, Pastor J.F. Hamm officiating. Mr. Payne was a prominent member of the community and life-long resident of Washington County. He was a former member of the Salem City Council, past president of the Washington County Fair Board, and former member of the Salem Planning and Zoning Commission. He was the former president of the old Morris Payne Farm Implement Company of Salem.
He was a member of the K of P Lodge, the Salem Lions Club, Salem Exchange Club, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was also a member of the Olive Branch Primitive Baptist Church.
He was born March 20, 1912, in Pekin to William L. Payne and Zella Motsinger Payne. He married Lucille Leonard Payne May 16, 1934, who preceded him in death Saturday, November 30, 1991.
Mr. Payne is survived by one son, Bernard G. Payne of Salem; two daughters, Helen June Schwein of Pittsboro, Indiana, and Sandra F. Day of Salem; two sisters, Elsie Walker of Greenwood, Indiana, and Geneva Cornwell of Salem; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday.
