William Elias Payne died on 3 January 1925 at Salem, Washington Co., IN, at age 74 OBITUARY #1 - The Salem Leader or Democrat, Salem Indiana; after 3 January 1925:

WILLIAM PAYNE
     William Payne, who has been in ill health for a number of years, died at his home on E. Mulberry St., of lung trouble, Saturday morning at 4:30 o’clock. The deceased was making arrangements to close his home and go to the home of his sister, Mrs. Sylvester Graham at Logansport, when taken so severely ill. He had never married and for several years had been living alone in Salem where he had a brother and sister residing, who saw after his welfare. His remains were taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. S. C. White.
     After a few days of complete disability he quietly went away to his reward on the early morning of January 3rd, 1925, having reached the age of 74 years, 3 months and 25 days.
     Will, as he was commonly known, grew to manhood in the Highland neighborhood and all knew him to be a jovial, friendly and good natured neighbor.
     At the age of 24 years he joined the Highland Methodist church, under the pastorate of Rev. Wm. H. Grimm, and was always a faithful worker as long as his health permitted. He was a member of the K. of P. Lodge, and a Charter member of the Red Man Lodge.
     The later years of Mr. Payne’s life were spent in Salem where he clerked in the stores of John _. Williams, Charles Mobley and Frank Summers until his health failed.
The last six years of his life were quietly spent in his own home in Salem.
     He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. S. S. Graham, of Logansport, Ind., and Mrs. A. C. White, of Salem. Four brothers survive, Byron of Borden, Jordan, of Vallonia, and Leonard and Edgar of Salem. His parents, two brothers and two sisters have preceded him in death. Besides his relatives he leaves a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his going.
      There is no death; An Angel form walks o’er the earth with silent tread;
      He bears our best loved things away and then we call them dead.
