S. O. PAYNE PASSES AWAY AT SO. BOSTON
Was LEADER Correspondent For More Than Forty Years
The LEADER joins a host of friends and neighbors in paying tribute to a faithful friend in South Boston, S. O. Payne, who, for more than forty years served this paper as correspondent from his community. He was always ready to serve in this duty in which he found great pleasure and never failed to send the news of his neighborhood until shortly before his death which occurred at his home last Friday.
Samuel Oscar Payne, son of Jeremiah and Catherine Payne, was born July 21, 1866, and departed this life, Nov. 9, 1928, age 62 years, 3 months and 18 days, he being the youngest child and only son of a family of 6 children.
He was united in marriage to Dora L. McClellan on August 12, 1886, and to this union were born 5 children, Eva, Ray and Willie, of this place, Mrs. Jason McCoskey, of Webster City, Iowa, and Mrs. Ellis Rodman, who preceded her father to the Great Beyond three years ago.
Besides his wife and four children he leaves to mourn his departure, one sister, Mrs. William A. Walker, of South Boston, five grandchildren and a multitude of neighbors and friends.
He became a member of the Methodist church at Conway when he was but eighteen years of age, where he worshipped and toiled for the betterment of the community as long as he was able to attend. Four years ago he developed a cancer and, although everything was done that was humanly possible it was of no avail.
Oscar, for that was the name by which we knew him best, holds an enviable place in the hearts of the people of this community. It can truthfully be said that none was more loyal in the support of church, school and other worthy enterprises in the community, always ready to do his share in sickness or to help the unfortunate. These qualities, together with his unusually pleasant disposition, gave him a welcome wherever he was known. He leaves a vacant place in the home and the entire community regrets their loss but it is satisfying to remember that his life has not been lived in vain.
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
For tho’ from out our bourne of time and place,
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
He was buried in November 1928 at Conway Cemetery, Franklin Twp., Washington Co., IN.
