Graduate of Darmouth 1913-1917. Was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He went on to serve as pvt. 1st class pursuit pilot during WW 1 (141st Aero Squadron, 2nd Army), also flying reconissance aerial photography with the Flying Tigers. His plane was a vintage canvas and wood bi-plane--a British made SE-5.
Graduated with a Ph.D. and J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1922. He married Gertrude Edith Tenk on Sep 27, 1922 in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. Mark served as Illinois State's Attorney 1936-40 and 1940-44, and then served as an Illinois State Representative 1932-36. He was asked to run against the now famed Senator Everett Dirksen when he first ran for the U.S. Senate in 1950. Mark declined, feeling he could better serve the citizens of Illinois by staying on at a more local level of government. (The nationally known Senate Minority Leader, Dirksen is most often noted for the quote: "A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon, you're talking real money." He is also known for: "I am a man of fixed and unbending principles, the first of which is to be flexible at all times.")
Mark was awarded the Selective Service Medal by Harry Truman. He was also a Mason (Lodge Member).
A multi-talented person: Mark won many awards for his photography excellence and was published in many photography magazines. He won awards at many public showings. Most of our ancestry portraits were taken, developed, preserved, and enlarged by Mark. He eventually bought a land Abstract Co. which he housed in his law office building (the old Illinois State Bank of Quincy Building). He did this so he could buy film as well as a photography development studio and equipment to expand his hobby through such a business.
He was buried in September 1952 at Woodland Cemetery, Quincy, Adams Co., IL.
