Cpl. Petete Sends Home Interesting Italian Souvenirs
Now the proud possession of the Emet Petete family, is a shipment of gifts from Italy-sent by their son, Cpl. Hugh Petete, who is serving there with the quartermasters corps of the 36th division. The shipment which had been on its way one month, was received here Thursday. Included in the shipment was a field percolator, about three inches high is complete with tiny lamp underneath and one-cup pot and a tiny steam pipe. A picture of Lucille, Cpl. Petete’s sister is already in the artistic shell frame. Cpl. Petete does “not write often but his letters are long and cheerful” his family said today.

F, b. 28 November 1883, d. 26 December 1955
     Note: AUNT BLANCHE
Aunt Blanche was born, Nov. 28, 1883, near Gordo, Pickens County, Alabama. The first child of James and Eudora Petete. The house was an old log house with a dog run down the middle. It was on the top a hill, over looking a river bottom. In this way the wind would help keep the mosquitoes blown away. It was said that the river bottom was a heaven for marlaria carrying mosquitoes. William Bryant Hollingsworth said there was a grave
yard back of the house, with several graves, people dieing from malaria. This may have had some thing to do with
the Petete family moving on. They moved over into Arkansas, around Judsonia in White county. Staying here from around 1892 to 1895 when they moved on to Houston, Arkansas. While here at Houston she met and married John Cheek, on Nov. 1, 1903. John and Blanche moved over close to Centerville, Yell county, that was where John was born. They farmed until
moving out to Indian Territory, I think it may have been some time in 1905, because James and Eudora left Houston and came to Holdenville in December of 1904. John and Blanche stayed at Centerville until they could sell their livestock and house. So it must have been some time in the early part of 1905, when they made their trip
out here. Ivey Blanche Petete was born on 28 November 1883 at Pickens Co., AL. She was the daughter of James Leroy Petete and Nancy Eudora Cockrell. Ivey Blanche Petete married John Wesley Cheek, son of Henry Cheek and Mary Poe, on 1 November 1903 at Houston, Perry Co., AR. Ivey Blanche Petete married (?) Phillips after 1925. BOILER EXPLODES EAST OF WEWOKA
KILLING TENDER THEO PETETE FATALLY INJURED
WHEN BOILER BURSTS
Blown 150 Feet
Medical Aid Failed To Revive Injured Man, Every Nerve In Body Broken

Theo Petete, a pumper at the Dixie Oil company's water station on WEWOKA creek, about two miles east of Wewoka, was fatally injured when a boiler blew up last Saturday morning. No one was near the pump station when the accident occurred, but a young lady, living nearby, Miss Evelyn Newman, had noticed Theo letting the steam out of the boiler a few moments before the explosion, Miss Newman, returning into her home, was not an eye witness of the accident. Hearing the explosion she ran to the pump station and found Theo laying about 150 feet from the boilers, one of which was blown to pieces, Miss Newman ran to where the injured man was laying and laid his head in her lap. He appeared to rally for a moment and ask her what had happened to him, after which he seemed to relapse into unconsciousness. A brother of Miss Newman was working close by and obtained a car and took the injured man to a Wewoka Hospital. When examined by physicians at the hospital, it was found that in addition to internal injuries, the young man sustained a broken ankle and shoulder. His face and body was punctured with scales from the boiler and he was burned and scalded to a boneless degree. It was thought that every nerve in his body was broken by the explosion. After lingering for 24 hours ours in a dazed condition, becoming conscious but three or four times when he asked those around the bedside what had happened to him, or mentioned how terribly he was suffering he passed at 10:30 Sunday morning. The remains were brought to Holdenville Monday morning and services were held in the Baptist church at 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. Rev. J.E. Kirk, pastor officiating. Interment followed at 2:30 in the Holdenville cemetery under the auspices of the Independent Order of Odd fellows. Theo Petete had lived in Hughes County practically all his life, coming to this vicinity with his parents December 4, 1904. He was born in White County, Arkansas April 8, 1895 and at the time of his death was 31 years, 10 months and 10 days old. He was never married. He volunteered as a U.S. soldier and served in the World War. He left to morn passing besides a host of friends, five brothers and four sisters: Mrs. Blanche Phillips, Mrs. Anne Middleton, Mrs. Bessie Puckett, Mrs. Mary House a twin sister to Theo: Emmet Petete, Charley Petete, Spencer Petete, Coleman Petete, and Cecil Petete. All of the brothers and sisters were present at the bedside during Theo's last moments. He was buried on 23 February 1926 at Holdenville Cemetery, Holdenville, Hughes Co., OK.
