Wayne Richard Phillips, son of Cecil M. and Loala (Kint) Phillips, was born February 17, 1918, in Wayne County, Iowa and passed away April 6, 2012 at the Prime Nursing & Rehab Center in Des Moines.
He was united in marriage to Elverda Louise Rush on September 29, 1941 in Bethany, Missouri. He and Elverda were both life-long residents of Wayne County where they farmed for over 43 years before retiring and moving to Corydon. After Elverda's death in 2005, Wayne remained in his home until November 2009 when he moved to Our House in Corydon.
Wayne was a member of the Corydon First Baptist Church where he had served as a trustee and was also a member of the Men's Fellowship. He was also a member of the N.F.O.
His parents, Cecil and Loala Phillips, wife Elverda and one great granddaughter preceded him in death.
Wayne is survived by his daughter Janet Petty of Des Moines, grandchildren Ruth Alison Weiss and husband Devin of Riverside, New Jersey and Janel Cooper of Crawfordville, Florida, and four great grandchildren. Other survivors include his brother Wilbur Phillips of Marshalltown, brother-in-law Wilbur Rush of Centerville, sister-in-law Wilma Hellyer of Springfield, Missouri, and several cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
He was buried in April 2012 at Corydon Cemetery, Corydon, Wayne Co., IA.

He began Ceres Cable TV, owned multiple Almond Ranches in the area and founded and owned River Oaks Golf Course. He attended Ceres High School where he met his future bride, Carol Marie Romesha. They married on July 27, 1951 and moved to Fremont in 1958, where Jim was in the insurance business. With his wife he developed a very successful real estate business. Jim's health prompted the couple to move to an almond ranch in Hickman in 1970. Mr. Phipps moved back to Ceres in 1973. Jim started the first Ceres cable TV franchise. In 1979, Jim and Carol developed River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres. Both Jim and Carol ran the businesses with family members. Mr. Phipps helped to start the Junior Golf program at River Oaks, ultimately introducing the sport of golf to over 8,000 area youth. He also used the golf course to raise tens of thousands of dollars for Community Hospice and Ceres High School. Carol Phipps died a year ago on August 31, 2008. Mr. Phipps' personal life was punctuated with a series of tragedies. He watched three of his sons pass away. Son William H. Phipps died in an airplane crash in Alaska, Douglas A. Phipps died of cancer, and son Robert L. Phipps, a member of the Ceres City Council, died of a heart attack at age 44 on December 2, 2007. He leaves behind two children, Michael D. Pfc. Karl E. Phipps, 22, was reported killed in action in France on August 21, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Phipps, Charlestown Rd., Tuesday. He had previously been reported missing in action and had been wounded August 9.
A native of New Albany, Pfc. Phipps was a graduate of the High School and well known there for his interest in band work and basketball. He would have been in the Army two years in October and had served overseas since February. He was formerly employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.
Besides his parents Pfc. Phipps is survived by a brother, Pfc. Russell D. Phipps.

Memorial services for Karl E. Phipps, 22, who was killed in action in France on August 21, will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ, Sellersburg, Sunday, Oct.. 8.
A native of New Albany and a graduate of Senior High School, Pfc. Phipps was a former employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Phipps, Charlestown Rd. and a brother, Pfc. Russell D. Phipps.
He was buried at Sellersburg Cemetery, Sellersburg, Clark Co., IN, Findagrave #50544520.

Army Reports Death In Action Of Karl Phipps
Former NAHS Athlete And Band Member, Overseas Since February, First Reported Missing In Action; Had Returned To Front After Recovering From Wounds
Pfc. Karl E. Phipps, 22, was reported killed in action in France on August 21, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Phipps, Charlestown Rd., Tuesday. He had previously been reported missing in action and had been wounded August 9.
A native of New Albany, Pfc. Phipps was a graduate of the High School and well known there for his interest in band work and basketball. He would have been in the Army two years in October and had served overseas since February. He was formerly employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.
Besides his parents Pfc. Phipps is survived by a brother, Pfc. Russell D. Phipps.
