Parley Nash Phelps died on 1 July 1903 at Oreville, Hocking Co., OH, at age 60 "Well Known Business Man Killed in a Runaway
Like a bolt of lightning from a clear blue sky, came the news late Wednesday evening that Parley Phelps, the well known business man who has done business at the same old stand for more than a third of a century at Oreville, just west of town, was killed. Mr. Phelps had been to Logan and was returning home at about 7 o'clock when the regular evening train was switching cars on the 'Y' between Oreville and Gore. At the point where the accident took place, the wagon road is close to the railroad.
He was driving a Wyoming pony which became frightened at the train, whirled around and started back towards Gore at a fearful pace. Many eyewitnesses on the train saw the sad affair but we were unable to obtain a clear statement as to just how the accident resulting in his death an hour later occurred. It seems that after a short distance had been traversed the horse was sufficiently under control for Mr. Phelps to get out and catch it by the bridle when suddenly it reared upon its hind feet and coming down struck him on the the chest and head with its fore feet knocking him down and tramped him to death. It then continued its mad flight running into two other buggies and doing slight damages. He was buried in July 1903 at Old Otterbein Chapel Cemetery, Falls Gore Twp., Hocking Co., OH.
