Charley Poffenberger, widely known Adel man who has been a resident of this community for 60 years, passed away at his home in Adel on Sunday, 26 Nov. Death came to him as a result of a heart ailment from which he had been suffering for more than a year. It brought to a close a long life of usefulness and of straightforward endeavor.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church in Adel, with Rev. H.M. Sippel in charge. Many old friends of Mr. Poffenberger and of the family were in attendance. Musical numbers were given by Mrs. Doris Forret and Miss Dorothy Grimm, with Mrs. Miriam Caudron as accompaniest. Casket bearers were Ray Bentall, Loren Bentall, Irl Walker, Donald Wicks, Ralph Gnagey and Elmer Woods. His final resting place is in the Brethren cemetery northwest of Adel in the community where the family lived for many years.
Mr. Poffenberger, who was engaged in numerous business enterprises after moving to Adel, was born in Maryland, 14 May 1863, and at his death was 81 years, 6 months and 21 days old.
He was married to Mary Ellen Walker 2 Dec 1886, and to them thirteen children were born. Four of them have preceded the father in death. Those who are today mourning his death are Roy, of Bingham Lake, Minn; Fred of Norwalk, Iowa; Ira, of Greenfield; Albert and Lee of Adel; Mrs. Ellen Folk of Granger; Mrs. Ruth Glenn of Des Moines; Mrs. May Dillon and Mrs. Ada Myers of Adel.
He was buried in November 1944 at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Panther, Dallas Co., IA, Findgrave #14387913.
