Obituary -- Record-Eagle, 18 AUG 2011 (www.record-eagle.com):
John "Jack" Cantrell Bay, 82, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Jack was born Feb. 3, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., to the late Lovell "Ted" and June (King) Bay. He married Ruth Ball Myers on Jan. 28, 1984, in Traverse City. Jack served our country in the United States Army in the Security Agency Division. After his time in service, he returned to the University of Michigan and earned his MBA degree in Hospital Administration. He spent his career at the Rehab Institute in Detroit, CEO of Penock Hospital in Hastings, Bixby Hospital in Adrian, and finished his career at Munson Medical Center and Munson Healthcare.
He adored Ruth, loved his family, and especially his four-legged shadows, Annie and Bea. He had an extraordinary love for Munson, Traverse City, Rex Terrace on Elk Lake and U of M. He enjoyed tennis, sailing, fly fishing and loved a good game of poker with his buddies at Knife and Fork Club. He had a great love of singing, as shown by his participation in the U of M Men's Glee Club Chorus and many years in the Rotary Show Chorus. His motto of "Give of Oneself" was a perfect description of Jack, and he was rewarded a thousand times over. He also lived by his mother's adage, "If you can't say something nice about someone, then don't say anything at all." That's a tough one to live up to. His genuine concern for the welfare of others was shown through his choice of vocation and his volunteer service to the community, whether it be as a board member, as an emergency guardian through Munson and Probate Court or as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children, through Probate Court, with Ruth. Jack served as past president of Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was past president of Michigan Hospital Association and an American Hospital Association Fellow. Jack also was a member at the Traverse City Golf and Country Club and a proud member of the Knife and Fork Club. One of his proudest moments was when he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Chamber of Commerce in 2001.
Surviving Jack are his wife, Ruth; children, James (Mary) Bay, of Detroit, Nancy (Greg) Merehouyias, of Detroit, and Judith Bay, of Traverse City; stepchildren, James (Deborah) Myers, of San Antonio, Texas, and Kathryn (Michael) Smith, of Detroit; grandchildren, Nicholas and Alexander Bay, Dimitrios and John Merehouyias, Sophia and William Myers; a sister-in-law, Jane Bay, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; half brother, William (Joan) Bay, Kenneth Bay, Patricia (Gene) Overbeck, and identical twin brother, Robert (Karen) Bay.
Visitation for Jack will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at First Congregational Church in Traverse City. The funeral will be held at the church on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at a later time at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation, The University of Michigan's Experimental Research or to a charity of one's choice. Please sign Jack's online guestbook at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
He was buried in August 2011 at Maple Grove Cemetery, Elk Rapids, Antrim Co., MI, Findagrave #75197410.
