Former County Officers Fined
CONROE -- Two former officers with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department paid fines of $300 each after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges alleging they tampered with reports on a fatal traffic accident, officials said.
The plea bargain accepted by state District Judge Lee Alworth Friday allowed former Capt. Paul A. McQueen and former Sgt. Ralston B. Bayer to be sentenced for a misdemeanor officense rather than the felony charge for which they were originally indicted.
McQueen, Bayer and former Chief Deputy Billy J. Grounds were indicted in December on charges of tampering with a government record associated with a Sept. 25, 1986, automobile accident that killed James Francis DeHart of Conroe.
Grounds, 57, died of a heart attack within a week of the indictment.
