Charles Casto Ramsey passed away on December 20, 2008, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. Mr. Ramsey was the son of the late Hilman Ramsey and Flora Stowers Ramsey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the aircraft carrier, USS Antietam during World War II. He gained his naval air wings on the USS Antietam and was a Golden Gloves boxer. He graduated from King College in Bristol, Tennessee, and received his masters degree from the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, WV. He was a member of the Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church and
the Abingdon American Legion #0012.
Mr. Ramsey was a successful football coach at Dundee High School, Dundee, IL, Tazewell High School, Tazewell, VA, Abingdon High School, Abingdon, VA, and East High School in Sullivan County, TN. He coached football and taught at the University of Houston, Houston, TX; Emory and Henry
College, Emory, VA, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rebecca Jane Ramsey; his wife of 64 years, Jane DeVault Ramsey; his sisters-in-law, Fain DeVault, Irma DeVault, and Mary DeVault Butcher; and his brothers-in-law, Edward DeVault, Nolan Butcher, and Bud Zeig.
Charles Casto Ramsey is survived by one son, Charles Hilman 'Skip' Ramsey, Damascus, VA; one daughter, Mary Fain Ramsey and her husband Lewis Purifoy, Charlottesville,
VA; one sister, Ruby Zeig, Galion, OH; two nieces, Karla Cline and Martha Butcher Crowe; five nephews, Steve Zeig, Randy Zeig, James Butcher, Ed DeVault, and Russell DeVault; two grandchildren, Anna Ramsey Purifoy and Layla Anne Smith; and three great grandchildren, Isabella Smith, Solana, and Nyellie Valles.
A graveside service for Mr. Ramsey will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at 1 p.m., at the Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, TN.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Charles Casto Ramsey Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 950, C/O Emory & Henry College, Emory, VA. The time and date of a memorial service will be announced at a later date. He was buried in December 2008 at Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN.

     Geneva Ramsey was born on 1 December 1901 at Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto Co., TX. She was the daughter of George Franklin Ramsey and Della York. Geneva Ramsey married George Kelly Barnes, son of George Frederick Barnes and Elizabeth Kelly, in 1919, after she was abandoned by George Barnes, Geneva remarried to Francis (Frank) X. Trimbach (1890 - 1947) about 1927. They may have divorced after the April 1940 census. Frank died in 1947 and Geneva later remarried to Frank Williams. Geneva Ramsey was cremated in 1997 at Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby Co., TN, ashes buried next ther her parents' grave. Findagrave #128192463. She died on 24 August 1997 at Perris, Riverside Co., CA, at age 95.

Mary Virginia Ramsey Venable, 99, of Bedford, died Saturday, May 10, 2008 in Oakwood Manor Nursing Home. She was born October 17, 1908, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Walter Glenwood Ramsey and Lelia Virginia Dooley Ramsey. Mary was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wendell Venable, one daughter, Mary Babb Venable Savage, two sisters, Ruby R. Saunders and Irene R. Veniskey, and two brothers, Albert H. Ramsey and Glenwood A. Ramsey. Mary is survived by her son-in-law, Richard V. Savage, of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, Todd V. William Ramsey was born March 4, 1747 in Scotland. He moved from Scotland to County Derry, Ireland. William immigrated to America in 1768 with 3 brothers (George, Hugh, John) and 1 sister (Martha Ramsey Brownfield). William married (1) Elizabeth Lackey in 1771 in Pennsylvania. William and Elizabeth had 7 children, Dr. John Ramsey, Nathan Ramsey (died in War of 1812), William Ramsey, Jr., Hugh Ramsey, James Ramsey, Mary "Polly" (Ramsey) DeMoss and Dr. Thomas Lackey Ramsey. Elizabeth is said to have been poisoned by a slave woman who thought she would be freed when Elizabeth was dead (c1789).

William and Elizabeth moved from Lancaster County, Pennyslvania to Rockbridge County, Virginia c1780 near the Natural Bridge.

William married (2) Martha Ochlitree on January 27, 1796 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. William and Martha had 7 children, Samuel Ramsey, George B. Ramsey, Emma Elizabeth "Betsy" (Ramsey) Gilmore, Jane "Ginny" (Ramsey) Patterson, Nancy (Ramsey) McMechan, Martha "Patsy" (Ramsey) Marshall and David Ramsey.

William and Martha moved from Rockbridge County, Virginia to Woodford County, Kentucky in 1802. In 1806, they moved to Preble County, Ohio.

William was a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of Militia of Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania in the Revolutionary War commanded by Col. Watson in 1777. He homesteaded 160 acres in Section 14 in Israel Township, Preble County, Ohio.

He was buried in July 1838 at Hopewell Cemetery, Morning Sun, Preble Co., OH, Findagrave #9105540.
