STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — T. Ronald Quinlan Jr., 85, a loving family man, the owner and president of T.F. Quinlan & Son Fuel Oil Service, and a skilled golfer, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, in Ocean Breeze.
Born and raised in West Brighton, he also lived on Lighthouse Hill.
Mr. Quinlan, who retired in 1995, was principal owner and president of the Quinlan fuel company. The firm was established in 1888 and is one of the longest continuing businesses in the borough.
"He was a dedicated family man, a man of his word," said his son, T. Ronald III. "He had a good sense of humor. He loved his business and he loved his golf."
A graduate of the former Augustinian Academy, Grymes Hill, Mr. Quinlan left school at the age of 17 to join the U.S. Navy. He continued his education after World War II and completed his studies at Augustinian in 1947.
He earned his bachelor's degree in business from Pace College, now Pace University, Manhattan.
Mr. Quinlan was president of the Richmond County Country Club in the 1980s. He also served on the boards of directors of Richmond County Savings Bank and Staten Island University Hospital for several years.
He loved golf, and won the Richmond County Country Club's championship in 1958. He was twice the runner-up in the Staten Island Amateur golf competition, and won the Lords Valley (Pa.) Country Club's championship three times in the 1960s.
He also was an avid bridge player and enjoyed reading historical novels, especially those set in the Revolutionary War period.
Mr. Quinlan was a parishioner of St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Richmond.
His wife of 51 years, the former Beverly Walker, died in 2003.
Along with his son, T. Ronald III, surviving are his son, Stuart; a brother, Thomas F., and a sister, Jacqueline Mulholland.
The funeral will be Monday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
