Ronald Joseph Readmond was born on 14 May 1937 at Baltimore, MD. He was the son of Joseph Carlisle Readmond and Evelyn E. Franklin. Homberg, daughter of Frank Edward Homberg Sr. and Thelma Alverta Gill. Occupation: Officer, Baltimore City police department.

The Baltimore Sun (Baltimore, Maryland); Wednesday, 28 January 1987; Page 13; (Newspapers.com):

Warm hearts thaw out puppies found in snow

From a distance, the eight little balls of fur appeared to be baby raccoons, huddled together in the extreme cold.

But police Sgt. Ronald J. Readmond wasn't sure. So he left his patrol car and trudged through the deep snow of Loudon Park Cemetery in Southwest Baltimore for a closer look.

What he found were eight puppies apparently abandoned and left to die. "They look like they're 3 or 4 weeks old," the sergeant said.

The litter was huddled under a rock that offered some protection from the wind and snow, but "the poor things were shaking so bad," said Sergeant Readmond, 49. One of the puppies' hind legs was nearly frozen stiff."

The sergeant, who already has two dogs at home, Bo and Angel, carried the puppies to the back seat of his patrol car.

As he drove to the Southwestern District station on Font Hill Avenue, he said, his new charges ran amok. However, other officers at the station immediately adopted them. Officers gathered some rags and found a cardboard box for a bed, and everyone chipped in for dog food.

Most of the puppies are brown and black, but two are white with black patches.

"They're really furry little guys," Sergeant Readmond said. "I don't know what kind they are. Someone said they might have a little German shepherd in them."

The sergeant was taking a shortcut through the cemetery between Frederick and Wilkens avenues about noon when he saw the dogs.

"Someone had to drop them off there," he said. "There is no way they could have gotten through that snow by themselves.

He thinks enough police officers and neighbors will adopt the foundlings to save them from a trip to the animal shelter.
