Judge Thomas Sidney Reese

M, b. 31 January 1844, d. 10 February 1915
Judge Thomas Sidney Reese was born on 31 January 1844. He married Mary Virginia Lester. Judge Thomas Sidney Reese died on 10 February 1915 at age 71 Obituary (Findagrave.com):

Judge T. S. Reese Dead

Distinguished Jurist. Patriot and Citizen Entered Into Rest.
Judge T. S. Reese passed peacefully away at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of this son-in-law and daughter. Prof and Mrs. D. W. Spence, at the A&M College. He had been in very feeble health for a long time and his death was not altogether unexpected.

Judge Reese was a native of Selma Ala., 71 years of age, and was one of the best known and best beloved citizens of Texas. Distinguished as a jurist, patriot and citizen, he held a warm place in the hearts of the people of the State, who loved him for his many virtues, his spotless and blameless life.

For nine years he had been associate justice of the Court of Civil Appeals, First Supreme Judicial District at Galveston, and never was the bench of Texas rendered more distinguished service, nor the judicial ermine worn with greater honor and blameless integrity.

The manner of man Judge Reese was is best described by his colleague, Chief Justice of the Court of Civil Appeals of the First Supreme Judicial District Robert A. Pleasants: "The zeal, profoundness and scholarly attainments of Judge Reese made him loved of all who knew him. His was a rich personality. Always jovial and possessed of a rich and refined sense of humor, his company was well kept by any man. Into his work he carried an earnestness and zealous industry characteristic of the manner of man he was. His opinions were the results of scholarly attainments, patience, profundity and prodigious research. The State has lost a valuable servant, the people a friend and his intimates a well-beloved comrade."

Judge Reese is survived by four children – Mrs. D. W. Spence of College, Mrs. W. E. Heslep of Austin, J. V. Reese of Houston and G. L. Reese of Houston.

The remains were taken to Hempstead, the old family home, at 4 o'clock this afternoon, and will be laid to rest in that city at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon beside his wife, who died in 1904. Many friends from College and Bryan attended the short services held at College this afternoon preceding the departure for Hempstead.
Bryan Daily Eagle, February 11, 1915.

He was buried in February 1915 at Hempstead Cemetery, Hempstead, Waller Co., TX, Findagrave #55674188.

Zona Priscilla Reese

F, b. 5 May 1894, d. 28 November 1943
Zona Priscilla Reese was born on 5 May 1894 at Little River, Rice Co., KS. She was the daughter of John Reese and Emma Marie Knauss.1 Zona Priscilla Reese married Everett Clare Newell, son of Plimpton Kelly Newell and Mary Elizabeth Morford, on 27 October 1920 at Pratt Co., KS. Zona Priscilla Reese died on 28 November 1943 at Stafford Co., KS, at age 49 OBITUARY:

Mrs. Clare Newell

Zona Priscilla Reese was born May 8, 1894 near Little River, Kans. She passed away on Nov. 28, 1943 at Feldhut Hospital in Stafford, Kans., at the age of 49 years 6 months and 23 days.

Her parents, Emma and John Reese had migrated in the early days from Pennsylvania. In her early childhood the family moved to Pratt county, four and one-half miles northeast of Pratt. Here Zona grew to young womanhood, and graduated from Pratt high school. Later she attended Normal there and also Teachers College at Emporia. She taught two years in Antrim schools and finished her career as a teacher at the Eureka school in the spring of 1920.

Zona was united in marriage to Everett Clare Newell on Oct. 27, 1920 at Pratt, Kans. To this happy union five children were born, Beth Kathleen, Lois Maxine, Calvin Clare, Dean Lee, and Wayne Everett.

In this good Christian home these children have been patiently and lovingly taught the right ways of living.

Zona professed her faith in Christ, her Lord, at an early age, and joined the Christian church at Pratt, where she remained a faithful member, until she joined her husband in the Eureka Methodist church at the time of her marriage. She has enjoyed working in the Sunday School and in different departments of the church and in the community.

She loved flowers. It was a hobby with her to grow and share them with others.

About four years ago her health began to fail, which caused her to be missing from her accustomed place at times. During several months she has been cared for lovingly by all her family. All that skill and love could do has been finished, and the Heavenly Father, who doeth all things well, called her gently away to a better land, in the evening of Nov. 28.

We love to think of her happy disposition, her kind consideration for others, her sweet and ready smile, her good hospitality.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Clare, and five children, also four sisters, Mrs. Clara Cochran, Wichita; Mrs. Fannie Bigwood, Pratt; Mrs. Sadie Armstrong, Pratt; Mrs. Abbie Sherrell, Wichita, her stepmother Mrs. Emma Reese, Allentown, Pa., and two brothers, Eli Reese, Pratt, and Milton C. Reese, Modesto, Calif., and a host of friends and relatives.

The funeral was held in the Eureka Methodist church Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. J. Ralph Watkins, pastor of the church, delivered the sermon. Peacock & Soice were in charge. Interment was in the Stafford cemetery.

OBITUARY - The Comet, Johnson City, TN, November 14, 1891. (Findagrave.com):

A FATAL ACCIDENT.

A Little Daughter of Col. E. C. Reeves Meets a Sad Death.

One of the saddest accidents that perhaps ever occurred in this city happened yesterday about 7 o'clock a.m. at the residence of Col. E. C. Reeves. Mr. Reeves Oldest son, who is about fifteen years of age was looking in the bureau drawer for his ??? and saw a pistol that had been placed there by some one. It was a breach loading thirty-eight calibre. Finding it loaded, he thought it was not safe to remain there in that condition. ... all of the cartridges, but it seems that there was one cartridge left in it and in replacing the pistol in the drawer it in some manner was discharged inflecting a mortal wound on his sister who was playing near him. The ball entered the right eye clear of the lids and passed directly through the head coming out at the base of the brain and burying itself in the wainscoting of the house. She lay unconscious for two hours, when the last breath came and her precious soul went home to heaven. Little Alice Felicia was nearly three years old and was not only the pride and joy of her loving parents, sister and brothers, but all who knew her. The deepest sympathy of the whole city goes out to the bereaved family, and especially to the brother who was the innocent instrument in this sad affliction. His love and devotion to his sweet darling little sister was proverbial, and he was always ready to do or to suffer for her.

The sad news spread over the city as if by electricity, and hundreds of sympathizing friends gathered in a short time at Col. Reeves residence, offering sympathy and help in the midst of such appalling sorrow, we stand abashed and can only commend the afflicted ones to the allwise God whom they love and serve, and who will some day make his purpose known.

The funeral will take place Sunday morning. The remains will be interred in the family burying ground west of town. Further particulars as to the funeral will appear tomorrow morning.

She was buried in November 1891 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Johnson City, Washington Co., TN, Findagrave #97486903.
