John V. Reid, about 50, of 502 W. Huisache ave., a real estate broker, shot himself to death at San Pedro and Magnolia aves. shortly before noon Wednesday.
H. L. Weatherford, owner of a service station at 2200 San Pedro, told police he saw Reid drive up to the corner and get out of his auto, clad only in blue shorts.

Reid then reached back into the car and obtained a 12-gauge shotgun, according to Weatherford, who said he seemed to stagger and sat down on the curb.
The filling station operator reported Reid leaned the muzzle of the shotgun against his right temple and pulled the trigger.
TWO SURVIVORS
Justice of the Peace M. D. "Buck" Jones returned an inquest verdict of suicide.
Reid, an independent real estate broker, worked with the Arthur Biard co.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elsie Reid, and a daughter.

Kathryn Ann Reid married Joseph Alaric Bowman Jr., son of Joseph Alaric Bowman Sr. and Gertrude Elizabeth Long, on 25 June 1942. KATHRYN REID BOWMAN, 80, of Fahrney Keedy Memorial Home and formerly of Bridgewater, Va., died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Fahrney Keedy. Born April 21, 1922, near Cearfoss, she was the daughter of the late Anna Rowland and J. Richard Reid.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Alaric Bowman Jr. They were married June 25, 1942.
She was a graduate of Clear Spring High School and Bridgewater (Va.) College. In 1966, she pursued a degree in reading instruction at Madison College. She taught special education at the Special Education Center at North Street School. She also was the reading specialist at Bridgewater Elementary for 20 years and part-time reading instructor at Bridgewater College. She was a member of the board of directors of Skyline Literacy Coalition and past president of Shenandoah Valley Reading Council. She helped initiate the Shenandoah Valley Reading Council's "Books for Babies" program. In 1994, she won the Virginia State Reading Association Literacy Award. She also volunteered as a tutor for the Adult Literacy Program. She was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren and Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, where she was co-chair of the library.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Rood of Charlottesville, Va; two sons, Richard Bowman and Daniel Bowman, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Paul Reid of Hagerstown and Dr. Rowland Reid of Colorado Springs, Colo; and one granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Esther Grossnickle.
Services were held at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren; burial was at the convenience of the family in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
