LYONS - Phyllis Marie Schardein Wiens was born at the family farm southwest of Nickerson, KS, to Ray Oliver Schardein and Inez Marie Ewing Schardein, Nov 17, 1922.
Phyllis graduated from Fairview Grade School in Reno County, Nickerson High School class of 1940. She attended Hutchinson Community Junior College. Phyllis worked at Fred Harvey House as a Harvey House waitress, numerous other part-time jobs and at Cessna Aircraft, where she helped build Gliders for the World War II effort. In Sept of 1941, she joined the United States "Waves" and served at the Great Lakes Naval Air Station, where she was a Flight Instrument Technician until Sept of 1945. Phyllis later attended Kansas State College, later renamed Kansas State University, where she got a degree in Home Economics and Interior Design. She was then employed by International Harvester as a Home Ecomomist, demonstrating their new lines of Home appliances. She would hold home demonstration group and community demonstrations.
She worked for Smokey Hill Electric at Ellsworth, doing similar demonstrations, Ark Valley Electric Co-Op hired her away and she became their first Home Electrification Advisor. On one of her home visits on Aug 13, 1952, she met Loren Wiens, they married on Nov 16, 1952, at Hutchinson Presbyterian Church. They took over the Wiens' farm in March of 1953, where they lived until May 7, 2007, when they experienced two major floods and wind-storms, causing them to choose to move to north of Lyons with their daughter, Jacque. Their first child, Jacque Charisse Wiens was born Feb 3, 1956, she survives.
Their second child, Leland Kurt Wiens, was born 17 Jan 1958. He passed away Aug 3, 1964, from drowning in a Fort Morgan, Colorado swimming pool. Phyllis was a homemaker and an Avon representative for 23 years. On Feb 1, 1977, she opened the S.H.E. Shoppe, a gift and collectible shop in Lyons, which she has continuously operated. Her memberships included: Chase Community Presbyterian Church, where she served on various committees and was a past Session Member. During her military duty she became a member of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband, Loren; daughter, Jacque Wiens; four nephews, Kenneth and Vickie McFarland, Kevin and Linda McFarland, both of Nickerson, Doug and Barbara Sykes of Kamiah, Idaho, Stan and Carol Sykes of Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Marilyn McFarland.
Funeral service will be held at 5 pm Saturday Oct 15, 2011, at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons, with burial in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.
Visitation 2 to 7 pm Friday with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 pm, Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons. Memorials in lieu of flowers, to the Bell and Star Fund or Community Presbyterian Church, in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

"The first time I heard him talk," she later recalled, "my jaw began hanging open. Did he make up all those things by himself?"
