Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

On June 28, 1953 Gerald and Bernice welcomed a son, Gerry. Upon his arrival, there were some complications with the birth, and his oxygen supply to the brain was compromised, resulting in a form of cerebral palsy. The doctors warned them to have him put away, in an institution, that he would have no quality of life whatsoever. Well, if anyone reading this has had the opportunity to meet either one of my grandparents, you would know, that that would have never been an option. Broken wing or not, they were going to take their angel home. This is a virtue that both my grandparents were blessed with, no matter who you are, or how broken you may be, they would accept you. No matter what, you would be loved. For the next ten months my grandparents and their son learned the meaning of true love and dedication. My grandmother tube-fed Gerry, and took him to physical therapy, and ran a house, all while raising a four year old daughter. My grandfather also worked, at one time, three jobs to pay for all the medical expenses. They were truly amazing people. On a summer morning in May of 1954, Bernice was in her living room, when she had a strange feeling come over her, mother's intuition, perhaps. I have heard my grandmother recite this many times, and it plays in my mind so vividly, I almost feel like I was there. When she walked into the kitchen, there sat Gerry in his highchair. She has said that it was like there was a glow to his face, like a halo of light was around him. He smiled at her, then he was gone. To this day, you can still see the hurt, the loss that she feels. Today, their son, my mother's brother, and my uncle is loved and missed by each and everyone of us. Amanda Serrano.

He was buried in May 1954 at Modesto Citizens Cemetery, Modesto, Stanislaus Co., CA, Findagrave #57578971.

Irene Scott

F, b. 26 November 1896, d. 27 September 1983
Irene Scott was born on 26 November 1896 at Kentucky per 1900 census, death record shows 1895.1,2 She was the daughter of Samuel L. Scott and Belle S. Hulett.1 Irene Scott married Joseph Crouch Johnson, son of William H. Johnson and Elizabeth Catherine Keefhaver, before 5 June 1917. Irene Scott died on 27 September 1983 at San Diego Co., CA, at age 86.
Note:

Irene had only one sibling, sister Frances Marie Scott, who married Rev. Ernest B. Motley. Frances and Ernest apparently had two children, a daughter Frances Lucille "Lucy" (1921-2000) who married Robert Campbell and lived at Garner, Iowa, and a son whose identity is unknown, mentioned as preceding Lucy in death in Lucy's 2000 obituary. In 1930, Lucy was living with her father in Kentucky, and her mother was institutionalized in a mental hospital at Jacksonville, where she was again listed in 1940.

Irene and Frances' mother, Belle S. (Hulett) Scott, died in 1938 and an obituary was printed in The Jacksonville Daily Journal on 5 FEB 1938, page 8 (Newspapers.com). In the obituary, it states that Belle was survived by "her daughters, Mrs. Ralph Moore Goltra of Los Angeles, Calif; Mrs. Marie Motley of Jacksonville and three grandchildren ...".

Because only two grandchildren can be accounted for as children of Frances Marie, I conclude that one of Irene's daughters must have survived to at least 1938, although no sign of them after the 1920 census has been found. DLB 2019.
