     Dr. Joseph C. Shafer was born on 17 September 1880 at Noble, Richland Co., IL. He was the son of John Washington Shafer and Malissa C. Palmer.1 Dr. Joseph C. Shafer married Minnie Sonner, daughter of John Caley Sonner and Amy Runyon, on 20 June 1907 at Richland Co., IL. Dr. Joseph C. Shafer died on 19 January 1931 at Noble, Richland Co., IL, at age 50 Obituary (findagrave.com):

Dr. Joseph C. Shafer, son of John Washington and Charity Malissa Palmer Shafer, was born at Noble, Ill., Sept. 17, 1880; departed this life at his home in Noble, Jan. 19, 1931, age 50 years, 4 months and 2 days.

June 20, 1907, he was united in marriage to Minnie M. Sonner. To this union were born three children, Harold R., Robert R. and Toby.

Toby preceded him in death Feb. 4, 1925. His father, mother, and one brother, Richard, all preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his going, his devoted wife; his two sons; Harold R. and Robert R; two grandsons, Joe Leland and Don Hubert, all of Noble; one brother, William A. Shafer, of San Antonio, Tex; two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Osterman and Mrs. Sue Henry, both of Noble, Ill.

His entire life was spent in and around Noble, excepting the time that he spent in his schooling at other places. After finishing his schooling, he taught school in the Noble vicinity for seven or eight years. He then attended the Eclectic Medical School at Cincinnati, Ohio. After graduating from this school, and serving his interns at other places, he began his medical practice here at Noble. He also passed the pharmacist examination and entered the drug store, combining his medical profession and pharmacy together, he successfully conducted both the remainder of his earthly stay.

He was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Noble in his early life and remained one of it's faithful and loyal members to the end, always ready to support it every way. He had served in about all the official positions. He became a member of the Masonic Fraternal organization, Noble Lodge #362, May 12, 1906. He being in the age of the country's call in 1918, registered for the service if needed.

Having to leave the number of his brother physicians here, he can be with that great physician of all mankind.

The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal Church at Noble, by the Pastor Rev. Sanders, and the Rev. J. W. Tucker, of Maune, Ill., Rev. Joakim, Pastor of the Christian Church, Noble, and Mr. C. E. Palmer, of the A. F. & A. M. The Masonic organization had their very beautiful ceremony at the cemetery. The body was laid to rest in the Noble cemetery.

Leonard Schafer 80 of Garden City died January 05, 2010 at Hospice House in Odessa. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.

Leonard was born June 01, 1929 in Garden City to Maud and Ben Schafer. He grew up in Garden City and graduated from Garden City High School. He married Elzan Tindol on August 13, 1955 in Lovington, New Mexico. She preceded him in death on October 09, 1999. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for Nutro a number of years and later owned S & W Chemical Company in Coahoma. He also ranched in Glasscock County. He was a lifetime resident of Howard and Glasscock counties except for the last seven years he lived in Midland.

Leonard is survived by: two daughters Linda Worley of Brownwood and Mackie (sic) Schafer of Lake Brownwood; three sons Ben Schafer and his wife Leisa of New Braunfels, Link Schafer and his wife Marcy of Colorado City and Steve Schafer and his wife Shelley of Lake Brownwood; fiancée Edith Ross of Midland; one brother Charlie Schafer and his wife Barbara of Garden City; one sister Dora Lee Newell and her husband J. C. of Garden City; eight grandchildren: Tara, Jeff, Rocky, Heidi, Travis, Meredity, Asia and Payton; and four great grandchildren: Justin, Stormy, Madison and Skylie.

Pallbearers will be Steve Schafer, Ben Schafer, Link Schafer, Rocky Schafer, Dick Nichols and James Bailey.

He was buried in January 2010 at Trinity Memorial Park, Big Spring, Howard Co., TX, Findagrave #46800806.

DEATHS.

Shafer: -- William H. Shafer was born March 13, 1834, and died November 28, 1917, at the advanced age of 83 years, 8 months and 15 days.

Mr. Shafer was born in Schoharie county, New York, and thirty-eight years later came to Clay county, Kansas, and located a mile from Clyde. Later, after spending about a year in Missouri, he settled in Vining, where he resided until his death.

His first wife, Elizabeth Shafer (nee Campbell), died about fifty years ago. On March 8, 1871, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Brazie. To this union were born seven children, five boys and two girls. The two oldest boys, Stephen A. and Frank L., preceded him in death. Besides the mother of his children there remain to mourn his loss, Fannie A. Press, Cuba, Kans., Wm. E., Clifton, Kans., Martha E. Dull, Manhattan, Kans., Burton A., Canada, and George H., Vining. Besides these there are several grandchildren. He was a member of the Methodist church for about forty years and then united with the Adventist church, of which he remained a faithful member for nine or ten years, until the date of his death. -- Clifton News.
