C. Preston Shackelford lived as she died, with determination, intelligence and verve. She had a special capacity to celebrate the many blessings that flowed from her fierce flair for creating opportunities for herself and her loved ones. She expressed her love and joy through her desire to live life to its fullest and enjoy sharing it all with family and friends.

Born January 30, 1948, Preston grew up in Virginia, attended Smith College and completed her bachelor’s degree at SUNY, Old Westbury, NY. She earned her JD at Bolt Law School, UC Berkeley, and in 1974 moved to Napa where she became the only woman practicing law at the time. Specializing in family law, Preston had a long and distinguished career as partner in Coombs and Dunlap before retiring in 2011. Preston’s success was fueled by her commitment to her clients and her desire to help families solve their problems through mediation and negotiation. She also served as city attorney for Yountville and was the first woman to join Napa Rotary.

Political activism was a major focus for Preston in the 1960’s when she supported civil rights, women’s rights and the peace movement, marching and organizing to bring about change. She took a hiatus from political involvement during her professional and family years, but returned vigorously to the fray following the presidential election of 2016. Wearing her pussy hat, Preston marched proudly in the 2017 Napa Women’s March and organized a huddle of women who continue to be active, especially in the Sanctuary Movement to advocate for and protect immigrant families in Napa Valley. Preston was an early proponent of the right to die, attending rallies and working to support passage of the bill in CA.

It was Preston’s devotion to family that brought her the deepest pleasure. In 1985, she and John [Barry] Todd [1940-2017] met on a Sierra Club hike and soon fell in love. When they married, Preston was catapulted into the arms of the Todd family, throwing herself mind, heart and soul into family life. Her biggest joy and accomplishment in life was helping John raise his daughters Jennifer and Cynthia, and then on Preston’s 50th birthday, she and John adopted their beloved daughter Morgan Leigh Todd.

For Preston, family life overflowed with fun and adventure. With her keen intellect and competitive spirit, Preston enjoyed playing bridge and forged lasting friendships through the various recreational activities she enjoyed. John was a consummate sailor; they bought a series of spiffy sailboats and, through many years of fierce sailing competition often came home with trophies. They enjoyed family outings to ski at North Star, boat, boogie board and water ski at Clear Lake, and hike and camp throughout California. John and Preston were devoted to their girls, and with deep devotion, they supported each other through the thick and thin of life.

Preston was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, and John nursed her back to health. When the tables turned, Preston cared lovingly and tenderly for John last fall during his four-month journey with leukemia. She and the family were by his side when he died the week after Thanksgiving. By Christmas, Preston knew her cancer had returned. She began treatment again, but this time experienced a terrible reaction and began to ready herself to walk the path of death with dignity.

In the final weeks of her life, Preston received a stream of friends, deeply enjoying the many visits, loving conversations and shared memories. Her 70th birthday request for a showering of gifts to celebrate Morgan’s baby (coming in August) was a lovely and poignant occasion with birthday balloons, poppers and party hats. She was determined to put all of her affairs in order, assuring the well-being of her daughters and happily dispensed detailed final instructions. Her clarity and sense of well-being were reassuring to all who visited her in the final weeks.

Preston died at the Sisemore family home in Petaluma surrounded by her loved ones. She will be missed by daughters Jennifer Kouisis with Stassi and Konstantine, Cynthia and her husband Adam Sisemore with Christopher and Bridget, and Morgan Todd with her fiancé Jhett Brewer. She is lovingly remembered by John’s mother, Noni, and her siblings Shack and Mary Shackelford and Kem Courtenay. Good journey.

In lieu of flowers, Preston and her family appreciate donations to Puertas Albiertas to assist our undocumented neighbors or to the Sanctuary Committee of the Napa Methodist Church. At Preston’s request, there will be no memorial service.

     Judge George Scott Shackelford was born on 12 December 1856 at Virginia. He married Virginia Minor Randolph on 1 July 1884 at Albemarle Co., VA. Virginius R. Shackelford, Jr. died November 26, 2004, after a long and distinguished life. V was born January 15, 1916, a son of Virginius R. Shackelford, Sr. and Peachy Gascoigne Lyne Shackelford. At the age of four, in order to keep up with his older brother, Lyne, he was enrolled in Miss Louise Holladay's day school, which he attended from kindergarten through the sixth grade when he became a student at Woodberry Forest School. Upon graduation from Woodberry in 1932, he attended the University of Virginia where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1936 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1938. While at the University, he was a member of the Delta Psi Fraternity (St. Anthony Hall) and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. In 1981, he became a member of the Raven Society as a distinguished alumnus of the University.

After graduation from the University in 1938, V returned to his hometown of Orange, and began the practice of law with his father and A. Stuart Robertson, Esq. Except for his years in the army, he continued the practice of law in Orange for the rest of his life.

At the outset of World War II, V enlisted as a private in the Eighty-Eighth Infantry Brigade, a National Guard unit, and part of the Twenty-Ninth Infantry Division. He was on active duty from January 23, 1942, until his honorable discharge with the rank of Major on December 7, 1945. He served overseas in the European theater from March 19, 1944, until October 30, 1945, during which time he was on the staff of General George S. Patton. During the winter of 1944-45, when troops under the command of General Patton repulsed the advance of the German Army in the Ardennes, north of Luxembourg, he was in charge of the advance section of G-4, a part of "Lucky Forward," and received the Luxembourg Croix de Guerre for distinguished service during this period. While in the army, V graduated from the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and from the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

While at the Command and General Staff School, he was introduced to his future bride, Carroll Kem, a daughter of Hon. James P. Kem, a distinguished Kansas City attorney who later served in the United States Senate. They were married in Kansas City on August 7, 1943, and for a short time lived in San Antonio, Texas, where V was serving on the Headquarters Staff of Third Army. After V concluded his army service, the Shackelfords returned to Orange, and made their home, first at "Peliso" in the Town of Orange, and later for over 50 years at "Brampton" in Madison County.

V Shackelford held a number of important positions during his life. He was a president of the Virginia Bar Association, a member of the Board of Visitors of the Medical College of Virginia, a member of the Council of the University of Virginia Law School, a trustee of Woodberry Forest School, a trustee and chairman of the Board of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, a fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation, and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. A sixth generation descendant of Thomas Jefferson, he was president of The Monticello Association, which is responsible for the care and maintenance of the family graveyard at Monticello. He was appointed Commissioner of Accounts of the Circuit Court of Orange County in 1946, and served in that capacity until his death. V was a widely respected lawyer with a general practice. He was involved in a number of important legal matters, including representation of Marion duPont Scott during her lifetime and as one of the Executors of her estate. He was responsible for carrying out her wish that Montpelier pass to The National Trust for Historic Preservation as a public memorial to President James Madison.

V found time in a busy professional schedule for participation in many sporting activities with his wife and children. He enjoyed foxhunting, whitewater canoeing, tennis, golf, and even croquet. For a number of years, he was a member of the Board of Stewards of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association and a member of the Carolina Cup Racing Committee. With his wife, Carroll, he established a modest steeplechase stable and participated in point-to-point racing in Virginia and Maryland. They owned only six horses, but each of their horses won at least one race over jumps.

Carroll predeceased V on December 22, 2000. V and Carroll had four children: V. R. Shackelford III, who practices law in Orange, Culpeper and Madison, C. Preston Shackelford (Todd) who practices law in Napa, California, Mary G. L. Shackelford (Burke), who writes and teaches on Vashon Island, Washington and Kem Shackelford Courtenay, who is a principal of Spaulding & Slye, working out of its office in Washington, D.C. and living in Arlington. V is also survived by his younger brother, George Green Shackelford.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 10, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Orange, with the Rev. Scott Hennessy officiating. Private interment. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Woodberry Forest School or the Thomas Jefferson Foundation. Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, is in charge of arrangements.

     Rachel Shackelton was born in 1796 at Knowlton, Sussex Co., NJ. She was the daughter of Benjamin Shackelton and Mary Ogden. Rachel Shackelton married Peter Wintermute, son of Peter Windermute and Esther Rhodes. Rachel Shackelton died on 20 November 1854. She was buried in November 1854 at Marshall, Clark Co., IL.

     Lee Shackleford was born on 23 February 1869 at Big Springs, Montgomery Co., MO. He was the son of J. Shackleford and Amanda (?) Lee Shackleford married Florence Missouri DaVault Powell, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Powell and Mary Margaret DaVault, on 16 August 1888 at Montgomery Co., MO. Lee Shackleford died on 3 June 1931 at Mexico, Audrain Co., MO, at age 62. He was buried in June 1931 at Hunter Cemetery, Americus, Montgomery Co., MO.

     Nana Lee Shackleford was born in August 1889 at Montgomery Co., MO. She was the daughter of Lee Shackleford and Florence Missouri DaVault Powell.

     William Porter Shaddy was born on 29 September 1921 at Galena, Cherokee Co., KS. He married Arlene Munsinger, daughter of Lesley Delause Munsinger and Mary E. Hawk, on 25 September 1943 at Church of God, Omaha, Douglas Co., NE. William Porter Shaddy and Arlene Munsinger were divorced at Omaha, Douglas Co., NE; Filing of petition reported in the Wednesday, July 28, 1949 issue of the Omaha World-Herald, p.8.
